He was a wonderful teacher, patient and kind. Somehow, he got a bunch of adolescents in the 70's excited about chemistry. Deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Doug was a master teacher, a colleague of mine and a friend. People talk about "class"...what is it? how do you describe it?....well all you had to do was spend five minutes with Doug, and there were your answers!
My deepest sympathies to all of his family members.

I'm fighting back the tears as I write this. Next to my parents, there was no greater influence on my life during my high school years than Doug Lanier. He was the perfect teacher; he demanded a lot and loved you a lot more. In August of 2014, my opening remarks to the teachers of Chippewa Valley was based on Doug, using him as an example of what a great teacher does. He didn't make cars, parts, or portfolios-he made a difference!
You will be greatly missed, dear friend!

I still remember the day he told me to stop calling him Mr. Lanier. I said I wasn't sure I'd ever manage it. To this day, calling him Doug makes me feel like the rudest student he ever had. But he was more than a teacher to me; he was a friend. He wasn't only the reason I loved chemistry, but also a big reason I attended Purdue and wound up going into teaching. The influence he had on the path of my life from the time I walked into his classroom my first day at SHHS is, quite frankly, immeasurable. And his support didn't end with graduation. We exchanged letters while I was at Purdue and for years after. Doug was the kind of teacher who I hope everyone has at least once in their life. I can only hope that I impacted one of my students' lives a fraction as strongly as he did mine. He was one of the great ones, and he will be missed.

My Condolences to his family. Mr. Lanier was a great teacher. He cared for his students and taught more then just Chemistry. Mr. Lanier stayed after school and helped students who wanted to learn on his own time because he cared for his students. He was one of the best teachers around and I will never forget all that he taught me. SHHS Class of 1991 -Yonyuth Hongsakaphadana Student, Danbury, CT

Uncle Doug was a good man with a big heart. He always had a story to tell and a smile on his face. He will be greatly missed. I will always cherish the memories of us visiting every year and all of us kids sleeping in the camper and having fun.

I had Mr. Lanier for chemistry in 10th grade. He changed my life! To this day, I still use some of the tools he taught - like dimensional analysis - and I've taught that to my kids and my students. I can say that of all my teachers, he was one of most impactful!! Sorry for your loss.

It has been an honor to have met Uncle Doug and having him in our lives. I have never met someone with such a gentle and kind heart. His love for animals is a goal for me. He always made certain I had the right dog in my life, so thoughtful. I will miss Uncle Doug at our gatherings and will think of him often. Aunt Betty, we are all here for you.

There are teachers that you have and then there are teachers that change your life. Mr. Lanier was one that changed mine. From letting us watch the first space shuttle in April 1981 to his foresight in bringing computers into his classroom and letting me be his computer aide back in 1982 was the reason I chose my career path in computer science and still loving what I do today. Thank You Mr. Lanier.
