Phelon Rammell Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary North on Jul. 6, 2017.
Phelon Scott Rammell, beloved son, husband, father, and grandfather, was called home to his Father in Heaven on July 6th, 2017. Scott was born in Logan, Utah on May 26, 1959 to Ora Jay Rammell and LaRene Grange. He is the oldest of seven children: Jayna, Marianne, Ramon, Vauna, JillDene, and Brook. Much of his boyhood years were spent in Fort Collins, Colorado. There, he learned the importance of hard work, and found a love for the outdoors. His father taught him to fish at a very young age. Scott continued fishing, and later took his own sons and grandsons on fishing trips. His sons will often describe fond memories of patiently waiting for the perfect catch and cooking it for the family. Scott participated in sports including downhill skiing, leading him to serve as a ski instructor in the beautiful mountains of Colorado. Scott graduated from Poudre High School in Fort Collins in 1977. At the age of nineteen he served a two-year proselyting mission for the LDS Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma teaching people about the gospel of Jesus Christ. Scott received an associate degree from Ricks College in 1982 where he participated as student body secretary. He graduated from Brigham Young University(BYU) in April of 1984, as valedictorian of the school of Psychology. He graduated from the J. Reuben Clark Law School and Marriott School of Management in Provo, Utah in 1989. While attending BYU he met and married the love of his life, Loralynn Recht. They lived primarily in Utah for the first 18 years of their marriage. Here they worked hard to raise a family and create a home centered on family and the gospel of Jesus Christ. While here Scott also served as a bishop in the LDS church for the Summit Park Ward in Park City, Utah. One of the memories that Scott often fondly recalled was the opportunity to serve as a gate judge for the 2002 winter Olympics during the downhill slalom skiing events. A new job with Tesoro Oil Company took his family to Washington State, and later to San Antonio, Texas. Scott served as vice president, general counsel; director, board of directors (two U.S. subsidiary companies); corporate compliance officer; and managing attorney with Tesoro. Throughout his years in the corporate legal profession, he specialized in antitrust, mergers, acquisitions, corporate governance, and more. He was a member of several professional associations, has been a speaker and presenter for numerous professional presentations, and assisted or led many major legal projects and conflict or dispute resolutions. Scott recently retired from Tesoro Oil Company, and focused on pursuing his passion for teaching at St. Mary's Law School. He was serving as assistant dean for administration at St. Mary's Law School when he passed away, a position he thoroughly enjoyed. He is known among the community for his extensive legal expertise, teaching experience, leadership, and so much more. Among his family, countless memories of family vacations, serving church and community, and encouraging his children to pursue their dreams are treasured. Scott held a wealth of knowledge and experience that he was willing to share with anyone, especially his family. He took his children all over the United States, and has traveled a significant portion of the world with his wife. One of his main focuses was to provide, and to take care of his wife and family. Scott has touched many lives, and will be sincerely missed by those with whom he has associated. Everything Scott did was motivated by his dedication to his family and to the Lord Jesus Christ. He is survived by his wife Loralynn Recht, his five children: P. Tyler (Alexandria) Rammell, Brittany (Jerry) Westover, Ryan (Danielle) Rammell, McKenna Rammell, and Austin Rammell as well as his seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his beloved mother LaRene Grange Rammell. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at University Hospital in San Antonio for the care, concern, and valiant effort to treat Scott. We are greatly impressed and feel at peace that everything was done properly. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the charity of your choice. Dear Laura:

In the process of announcing my retirement I was very saddened to discover that Scott passed away. His death occured at a much too young age but I trust that you can instill his qualities in that next generation.

Donna and my condolences to you and your family.

I first met professor Rammell in his first-year teaching our mergers and acquisitions class, at St. Mary's Law School. Afterwards, I went on to become his research assistant until my graduation from law school. Everything that I could possibly say about the man has probably already been said. He was a man of a few words, but always welcoming and willing to help, always positive, and no task ever seemed too big to accomplish. He was an amazing mentor to me in the classroom and out of it, giving me advice not only when it came to school, but also my career, and life, and those were conversations I will keep and remember for the rest of my life. May he rest in peace, and I'll see him again!

I met Professor Rammell in Law School. There were three of us that semester that are LDS and shared that common bond. Professory Rammell thank you for your example inside and outside the classroom. My deepest condolence to the Rammell Family.

I was so blessed to have had my life touched by Scott and to have his example as an inspiration to continue to follow. I know the veil is thin when it needs to be, and knowing Scott, he very likely will be as involved as permitted with his earthly family from the other side. I pray you will all feel peace and comfort and love to help you through your lives ahead.

We belong to communities of classmates, friends, coworkers, professional associations, church, and family again. Sometimes these overlap. We, Scott's coworkers, can hope that we were also his friends. We came today in his memory and his honor. Of course Scott would not want to be personally honored. It is not how he thought of himself, but it is how we thought of him. What he was and is, became part of what and whom we are. And we are better for having known him.

What a blessing to have an older brother who was always an example to me working hard to succeed not only in professional and educational pursuits but most importantly in rearing a close knit family unto the Lord and service to others and God through striving to live the gospel of Jesus Christ. How blessed we all are to know that families exist for eternity and that we will see our beloved brother, Scott, again. Thoughts and prayers always for the Rammell family.

All my love to you and your children. Our lives have been touched by Scott in so many ways and in ways I suspect we are not aware of. He showed such kindness of heart, generosity and love to us. I am grateful we know families are forever. I love you.

I only knew this great man for less than a year, but he made such a huge impact on me... I knew he valued his wife more than many camels, and his kids were his pride and joy. I'm a St. Mary's law student and I took him both Fall 16 and Spring 17. I planned to take him for Antitrust law in Spring of 18. I was so saddened to hear about his passing. When he told me how his first was pronounced I was so amazed by it that I always referred to myself as his "Full On" fan. He was a great guy, who will be missed.
