Mr. Samuel Richard Conkright Sr

Samuel Richard Conkright, Sr., 96, of Rockport, Indiana passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at Heritage Center in Evansville. He was born in Daviess County, Kentucky to the late James and Mary Payne Conkright. Mr. Conkright was a graduate of Owensboro Technical. He began working at Ken-Rad (part of which became General Electric) before being drafted into service. During World War II Samuel earned the rank of Sergeant while serving the U.S. Army in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre and the Philippines. He returned to G.E. where he served diligently for forty-two years, never missing a day of work. Mr. Conkright also farmed the land around his home in Rockport for sixty years. His work ethic was to be admired. He enjoyed bowling with the G.E. League, was an avid hunter, a lifelong member of the VFW and a member of the Moose Lodge. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Juanita Mae Conkright in 2000; his wife, Bobbie Conkright in 2017; sons, Samuel R. Conkright, Jr. in 2017 and Patrick Conkright in 2006. Mr. Conkright is survived by a son, Dr. Michael Conkright and his fiancé, Laura Ellsworth of Evansville; a daughter, Dr. Kathy Blankenship Wright and her husband, Jason of Atlanta; grandchildren, Kevin, Kelly, Hilary, John Michael, Andrea, Molly, Megan, Morgan, Avery and Wyatt; a number of great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Jim Pulliam of Gulfport, Mississippi. The Funeral Mass will be held 12:00 PM Friday, July 21 at St. Stephen Cathedral in Owensboro where visitation will begin at 11:00 AM. Burial with military honors will be at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery.
