LHS & WCU both. Don was a freshman. I was a senior. Story happened at WCU his freshman year. He Came to me near end of his first quarter very worried about his low grades. I laughed at him and assured him not to worry. I pointed out most teachers graded on the bell curve. He made almost, if not all A grades that quarter! The rest is history! I never saw him again after my graduation, but followed his career thru the years and was proud to have known him for a short time. I taught school a couple of years and then pastored churches for 40 years. I heard of his illness and called and talked to him. This was a short time before Christmas over a year before he died. He was hoping to live until that Christmas. Wonderful conversation! Great man! I am glad God gave him much more! Sorry this note so late.

I was fortunate to have been a teammate and roommate of Don's. Don was a man of integrity who loved his family. He was a loyal friend. When Don committed to a task, he completed it. He was a winner in all aspects of life.

Well done thy good and faithful servant. I remember a conversation we had at a Catamount Club auction one year. I had but one question for him and it was this. How on earth do you defend the triple-option? He responded with a classic answer by saying you put 10 in-the-box and do the best you can. What a great answer.

Coach Powers was a wonderful man. I've known him since I was a child when he first came to Western. I have too many lovely memories to mention them all. I do fondly recall him teaching my brother and me to swim at the old Breese Gym when he was in graduate school. I did not really care for the water but he persisted and I learned to swim. He remained part of our lives as well as my parents for all the years he and Jane were in Cullowhee. He will be missed.

The Citadel c/o 97, Coach Powers was an awesome coach and a great man. He stepped up when Taafe resigned. The transition was seamless and this us a testament to his professionalism and proficiency as a football coach. He was looked up to by so many. RIP Coach P. I'll see you on the other side.
