Robert Bobbitt Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary McCullough on Jan. 8, 2018.
Robert Lee Bobbitt, Jr., died on January 8, 2018, at the age of 95. He was born in Laredo, Texas, on October 4, 1922, to Robert Lee Bobbitt and Belle Westbrook Bobbitt. He lived in San Antonio since 1935. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1939. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas in 1943, and graduated from the University of Texas Law School in 1947, after serving in the Navy during World War II, including two years of sea duty in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He was awarded five combat unit citations, including for the battles of Leyte Gulf, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He married Elizabeth Calhoun of Tyler, Texas, on July 19, 1945. He began his law practice in 1947, as a partner with his father and continued to practice in San Antonio for more than 59 years. He was a member of the State Bar of Texas, the San Antonio Bar Association, the Texas Bar Foundation, and the Bar Association of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. His law partners included Ralph W. Brite, Thomas Drought, James L. Drought, his son, Calhoun Bobbitt, Richard F. Halter, his partner since 1972, and Darryl T. Watson. He was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio and served on many church committees. He was President of Boysville, Inc., in 1959, and a Trustee of Boysville Foundation beginning with its inception in 1960. He was a Trustee of the Elizabeth Sullivan Clem Trust, a director of Morningside Ministries, the Charity Ball Association and Sunshine Cottage, and a volunteer worker at Christian Assistance Ministry. He enjoyed collecting art, particularly painters from the southwest. He was a member of the Texas Cavaliers, the San Antonio Country Club, and a charter member of the Town Club of San Antonio. He enjoyed reading, especially history, listening to mainstream jazz and classical music, spending time at Flag Creek, the family place in the Hill Country which he and his wife acquired in 1970 and cherishing his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Calhoun Bobbitt and their first son, Robert Lee Bobbitt, III. He is survived by their sons, Calhoun Bobbitt, John C. Bobbitt and wife, Karen; and grandchildren, Maura Jean Bobbitt, Elizabeth Kathleen Bobbitt, Nolan Robert Bobbitt, Spencer Clair Bobbitt and Caldwell Dixon Bobbitt; and Elizabeth's nieces and nephews from Tyler. Following Private Burial, a Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio, 404 North Alamo Street, on January 12, 2018, at 3:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Joe Moore. The family suggests to friends who may wish to make gifts in memory of Mr. Bobbitt that they be given to Boysville, Inc., Christian Assistance Ministry, or another charity of your choice.

We are saddened to hear of Bob's passing. We have such fond memories of both he & LiZ, especially at our wedding and the years that followed while we still lived in Ft. Worth. Bob was a tremendous help to WJ after his dad passed away. WJ knew he could always count on Bob giving him sound advice. The entire Bobbitt family welcomed me with open arms immediately upon meeting them. By knowing them, I felt I knew Big Bub & Josephine. We've often thought of Bob over the years and wished him well. Our thoughts, prayers, & love are with the family during this difficult time. Bob is now reunited with Liz and we can only imagine how happy he is. Rest in peace, Bob and know you will be missed but never forgotten.
