Carolyn Wells Herbert, 79, recently of Wilmington, VT and formerly a 45-year resident of Harvard, MA passed away peacefully at her residence on Friday morning, December 28, 2018. She was the wife of William J. Herbert. Born February 13, 1939 in Waterbury, CT, Carol was the daughter of the late William F. Wells and Mildred Hoadley of Waterbury, CT. She grew up in Waterbury, attended Crosby High School and Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing where she earned her degree in nursing. In 1961, Carol married William Herbert of Waterbury. The couple later settled in Harvard, MA, where they raised their two children, Crista and Keith. For 13 years, Carol was a nurse in the office of Dr. Jeffrey Harris of Harvard. A lifelong volunteer, Carol especially enjoyed working with seniors through activities sponsored by the Council on Aging. Carol was an avid gardener and party host. She loved throwing parties for any event, from birthdays to a rainy weekend. She also found time to paint any flat surface with lively patterns and bright colors. One of Carol's favorite Harvard activities was attending Fruitlands Museum summer concerts. Throughout their time in Harvard, Carol and Bill frequently traveled to Vermont with their children, where they all enjoyed skiing. In 2014, Carol and Bill moved to Wilmington, VT to be near their children and grandchildren. In Wilmington, Carol noticed the need for and started a cancer support group, which continues to this day. She also volunteered for the Aging in Place initiative. Recently, Carol realized a long-time desire to paint a scene of people attending a Fruitlands Museum summer concert, and her painting was shown during the 2018 season. Carol is survived by her husband, William J. Herbert; her daughter, Crista Herbert Gannon, and husband, John Gannon; her son, Keith Herbert, and wife, Kathleen Cincotta; and her grandchildren, John Hambleton, Katherine Hambleton, and Kira McCloskey. She is also survived by her brother, Frederick Wells, and his wife, Ruth Wells, of Camarillo, CA. Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Carol for a period of visitation on Friday evening, January 4, 2019 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the Badger Funeral Home, 45 School Street, Groton. Her funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 10:00 AM in St. Theresa Church, 15 Still River Road, Harvard, concluding with interment in Bellevue Cemetery. A reception will immediately follow at the Groton Inn, 128 Main Street, Groton. A memorial remembrance will be celebrated on Saturday, January 12, 2019 from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the home of Crista and John Gannon, 68 Hall Road, Wilmington, VT. Bill, I am so sorry to see in the Watebury paper today that Carol has passed away. My sincere condolences.
After Tom passed away, when I would get upset, I would just close my eyes and ask him for a hug. I felt his arms around me. My love to you and your children. Arlene Bowen Sullivan

Aunt Carol, thank you for teaching me the meaning of unconditional love. Thank you for your constant support and guidance. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for bringing so much beauty and art into my life. Thank you for teaching me how to make apple pies. You are with me always. I love you.

Bill and family, what a shock to hear this. We have nothing but great memories of going to "Beach Gramma's" house in Milford, CT. and enjoying seeing everyone each year at family reunions ;-) GREAT times! Thinking of you, Maura, Craig & Wendy (Sheehan)

I'm so sorry. Carol was truly a caring, fun-loving person who indeed was the perfect, generous hostess in her beautiful Harvard home . Though our paths have not crossed for many years, I remember fondly the lovely times spent together.
