Waltham – Mr. Edward M. McDevitt, of Waltham, died Friday, February 8, 2019 at his home. He was 72. Ed was born in Lexington on October 7, 1946, a son of the late James J. and Pauline E. (Qualey) McDevitt. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1964 and after that went to work for the New England Telephone Company. His work career was interrupted while he served from 1965-67 with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After completing the management training program Ed spent almost forty years working for the phone company until his retirement. He was a lifelong Patriots, Red Sox and Bruins fan but his real passion was for salt water fishing on the Cape. He looked forward every fall to participating in the Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. He was a longtime member of the Lexington Elks where his almost professional cooking skills were put to good use and appreciated for years. Ed also served on the Lodge's scholarship committee. Ed spent many happy vacations with his family at Disney World and enjoyed many cruises with his late wife, Colleen. He got a new lease on life and a bounce in his step with the arrival three years ago of his grandson, Connor, who he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with. The husband of the late Colleen M. (McGrath) McDevitt, he leaves his children, Christine E. McDevitt of Nashville, Tennessee and Meghan L. Berman (Michael) of North Billerica; his grandson, Connor Berman; his brother and sisters, James McDevitt (Judy), Louise McDevitt (Michael Piniewski), all of West Dover, Vermont and Pauline McDevitt (Joseph Weigand) of Hyannis and many nieces, nephews and their families. Family and friends will honor and remember Ed's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, February 13th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham. Memorial donations may be made to the Lexington Elks Scholarship Fund, 959 Waltham Street, Lexington, MA 02421.

I am so sad to hear of Ed's passing. I have gone back to work for Verizon and still remember Ed as my CO Foreman in Somerville Ma. Ed is the kindest and best person I have ever worked for or even met for that matter. My long career always led me back to remembering Ed. I still see that smiling face and the solid advice he always gave me in getting through my career. Ed never had a bad word on anyone, or never let that smile down. Talk about humor, he was always telling jokes and with that look!!..Ed is in hi special position for the main man upstairs I am sure and hope to one day see him again. please accept my late condolences to the whole family and know he is till thought of often by many. God Bless you all.

Mr. McDevitt gave me a few rides to join the family up in Seabrook, NH. He was always quick with a laugh and patient with giggling teenage girls. I'm thankful for the happy beach memories with Christine and the whole family. Sending my deepest condolences to Christine, Meghan and the McDevitt/McGrath families.
