Thomas F. Flynn

Thomas F. Flynn, age 89, of Wakefield, formerly of Arlington, died peacefully at home on Saturday, March 19, 2022. Born in Woburn on November 4, 1932 he was the son of the late Thomas F. and Georgianna (MacDonald) Flynn. Mr. Flynn was raised in Stoneham and attended Saint Patrick School in Stoneham for 11 years until its closing in 1949. He graduated from Stoneham High School in 1950. He was an excellent athlete and a member of Saint Patrick's hockey and baseball teams. As a senior at SHS, Tom played first base and right field for the Stoneham Spartans baseball team, which won the1950 Middlesex League Championship. In 2012, the 1950 team was inducted into the Stoneham High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Tom served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of Northeastern University, earning both an undergraduate degree and a Master's in Business Administration. He worked for New England Electric System in customer service for 37 years, and was instrumental in establishing the Good Neighbor Fund, which provides support for those who need help paying bills, still in operation. Tom and his beloved wife of 58 years, Trudy, raised their six children in Arlington. He was an active parishioner of St. Camillus Church for more than 40 years, serving in many volunteer roles, including eucharistic minister and chair of the pastoral council. Tom and Trudy loved the Cape and spent many happy summers in West Dennis with their children and grandchildren. Tom was active in several organizations including the Retired Men's Club of Arlington, Stoneham Senior Center board member, Men's Club of Wakefield, and he was also an avid golfer and lifelong Boston sports fan, especially the Red Sox and Celtics. It was a happy day in the Flynn house when the Sox won the 2004 World Series, and even more so in 2007, 2013 and 2018! Tom participated multiple times in the Dana-Farber Fantasy Day at Fenway Park, where participants were allowed on the field as batters to raise funds for cancer research. He was the beloved husband of the late Gertrude "Trudy" (O'Brien). He was the loving father of Mary Myers of West Roxbury and Michael Fritz, Noreen Weihe & husband Edwin of Seattle, WA, Thomas Flynn & his fiancée Elizete of Wakefield, John Flynn & wife Lauren of Woburn, Julie Norton & husband Mark of Melrose, and Joseph Flynn & wife Anabel of Wakefield. He was the brother of the late Evelyn Barrett, Dorothy MacDonald, and Donald Flynn. He was the grandfather to 16 adoring grandchildren: Tom, Kate, Max, Honor, Nick, Morgan, Jenn, Matt, Andrew, Mallory, Patrick, Taylor, Anna, Isabella, Michael, and Alexa; as well as three great grandchildren: James, Colin and Heir. He is also survived by his dear friend, Priscilla Stafford, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law Deborah Flynn. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield Friday at 10am. Visitation for relatives and friends at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Thursday from 4-7pm. Interment, St. Patrick Cemetery, Stoneham.
