Alamo Jones’s legacy
Born Chance Martin, Jones became a legend of country music even though he never had a major hit of his own. His country career began in television, when he was a cue card holder on “The Johnny Cash Show.” He became friends with Cash over the show’s three years, and the Man in Black gave Jones his nickname: “The Voice in Black.” He continued working with Cash, touring with him as a lighting technician and later stage manager and lighting director.
Jones began writing songs while touring with Cash, and in the late 1970s and early ‘80s, he recorded the album “In Search” under the name Chance. Released as a bootleg after Jones had no luck with Nashville record labels, the record became a cult classic. He released a second album in 2012.
In 2010, Jones joined SiriusXM as a sidekick on “The Cowboy Jack Clement Show.” After Clement’s 2013 death, Jones took over the show, which became “The Alamo Jones Show.” He became a popular favorite on the Outlaw Channel, known for his storytelling and his guests from the country music world.
