Brooks Thompson played with the NBA’s Orlando Magic, Denver Nuggets, and Phoenix Suns before coaching men’s college basketball at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Brooks Thompson, a former NBA player with the Orlando Magic, Denver Nuggets, the Phoenix Suns and others, died June 9, 2016, in San Antonio, Texas, according to multiple news sources. He was 45.
The death was confirmed by the University of Texas at San Antonio, where Thompson had coached the men’s basketball team until recently. No cause of death was immediately disclosed.
In a Twitter message, the Orlando Magic expressed the team’s “deepest condolences to his family and friends.”

Thompson was born July 19, 1970, in Dallas, Texas. He played high school basketball in Littleton, Colorado, before playing for Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University from 1989 to 1991. He transferred to Oklahoma State University and played for their team from 1992 to 1994.
The 6-foot-4 Thompson was selected by the Orlando Magic as the 27th pick in the first round of the NBA draft in 1994.
During his NBA career, Thompson played in 168 games and amassed a total of 760 points.
After retiring in 1998 after playing for his last team, the New York Knicks, Thompson coached or assistant coached a number of college men’s basketball teams before being hired as UTSA’s head coach in 2006. He coached the team until March 10, 2016.
