A military man
Herring, who was known to family and friends as Don Reed, joined the U.S. Navy before finishing high school and went on to a 20-year military career before his retirement as a lieutenant colonel. He flew B-47 and B-52 bombers, and he saw combat in the Vietnam War. After retiring, Herring started an auto detailing business. Warren often spoke of her three brothers as she campaigned for president, noting that although Don Reed and brother David were Republicans, their beliefs sometimes aligned with hers.
