Beloved Sesame Street actor
Emilio Delgado began his acting career in 1968 with a role on the Mexican American soap opera “Cancion de la Raza.” On his first season of Sesame Street in 1971, his character Luis owned the Fix-It-Shop with a character named Rafael, played by Raul Julia. Julia left the show after one season. Later in the series, Luis married “Sesame Street” character Maria (played by Sonia Manzano), with their wedding episode in season 19 much beloved by fans. The married couple were influential in depicting everyday Mexican American life on television. Outside of “Sesame Street,” he made guest appearances on many TV series including “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” “Hawaii Five-O,” and he had a recurring role on “Lou Grant.”
Notable Quote
“It’s just a continuation of whatever it was ‘Sesame Street’ was trying to do with inclusion, with showing different kinds of people (and) how they lived differently and they spoke different languages or they ate different food. And it was educating all those kids and families out there that had no idea that there were other people out there that were like this, that were different from themselves.” – He said in an interview with the Asbury Park Press in January, 2022, on joining the board of directors at the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice
