Frederick Waite Jr. (1967–2022), “Pass the Dutchie” drummer

by Linnea Crowther

Frederick Waite Jr. was the drummer for the British reggae band Musical Youth, known for their 1982 hit “Pass the Dutchie.”

Musical Youth

Waite was a founding member of Musical Youth in 1979 at the age of 13, along with his brother, Patrick, and family friends. Playing at clubs in their hometown of Birmingham while they were still in school, the band gained a following. They released their debut album, “The Youth of Today,” in 1982, featuring the single “Pass the Dutchie.” The song was an international hit, topping the charts at home in England and in other countries, and cracking the Top Ten in the U.S. “Pass the Dutchie” had a recent resurgence in popularity after being played on the popular streaming show “Stranger Things.” Musical Youth released a second album in 1983, including the single “She’s Trouble,” on which Waite sang lead. Musical Youth disbanded in 1985. When the band reformed in 2001, Waite did not join them.
