Joe D’Alessandris’ legacy

Joe D’Alessandris is best known for his 16-year career as an offensive line coach in the NFL, but his coaching career extends back much further. He was a graduate assistant in 1977 at Western Carolina University, his alma mater, leading to his first offensive line coach job in 1979 at University of West Alabama.

D’Alessandris became a college football mainstay in the decades ahead, coaching for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Texas A&M University, Duke University, the Georgia Institute of Technology and other schools. He also spent time in the Canadian Football League and World League of American Football.

He made the leap to the NFL in 2008, when he joined the Kansas City Chiefs as assistant offensive line coach. In 2010, he went to the Buffalo Bills, promoted to offensive line coach. After a two-year tenure with the San Diego Chargers, he ended up in Baltimore, where he served with the Ravens from 2017 until his passing. He helped the team remain in the top 10 in win rates for run and pass blocking over a six-year stretch.

D’Alessandris was recovering from an acute illness and surgery at the time of his death.
