The Impressions
Sam Gooden was a member of the group The Roosters in Chattanooga, Tennessee which relocated to Chicago. The group solidified with Gooden, Curtis Mayfield, Jerry Butler, and brothers Richard and Arthur Brooks and had a breakout hit in 1958 featuring Gooden’s baritone vocals on “For Your Precious Love.” Butler and the Brooks brothers left the group and Fred Cook became a member. The trio had their most successful period in the 1960s with soul songs that were a soundtrack for the civil rights movement. Their hits included “People Get Ready,” “It’s Allright,” and “Keep on Pushing.” Mayfield left the group in 1970 for a solo career. Gooden remained a member with various others performing as the Impressions until 2018. The Impressions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.
