Steve Grimmett (1959–2022), Grim Reaper lead singer

by Linnea Crowther

Steve Grimmett was the lead singer for the British heavy metal band Grim Reaper, known for songs including “See You in Hell.”

Musical career

Grimmett joined Grim Reaper in 1982, a few years after they had formed but before they had gained a substantial following. Their 1984 debut album was “See You in Hell,” featuring a title track that became one of their best-known songs. Grimmett’s wide vocal range and head voice became a hallmark of their melodic heavy metal. They followed it up with two albums, “Fear No Evil” and “Rock You to Hell,” gaining an audience on MTV’s “Headbangers Ball” and on rock radio stations. Grim Reaper disbanded in 1988, though they gained a new audience after their breakup when the songs “See You in Hell,” “Fear no Evil,” and “Rock You to Hell” were featured on “Beavis and Butt-Head.” Grimmett sang briefly with the band Onslaught before joining Lionheart and recording several albums with them. In 2006, Grim Reaper reformed, renamed Steve Grimmett’s Grim Reaper in later years as Grimmett became the only original member still with the group. He continued touring and recording with Grim Reaper until his death.
