Geneviève Page’s legacy
Page’s career began in France, but her acting became known internationally thanks to her playing Doña Urraca in 1961’s “El Cid,” working with James Garner (1928–2014) in 1966’s “Grand Prix,” and starring the 1970 film directed by Billy Wilder (1906–2002), “The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes.”
Page started on stage in France in the 1940s, making the leap to the big screen with 1950’s “Pas de pitié pour les femmes.” In 1956, American audiences got a look at her talent when she starred opposite Robert Mitchum (1917–1997) in the crime noir film “Foreign Intrigue.”
Her performance in the epic “El Cid” won Page acclaim, as did her role in Wilder’s movie. She later worked with director Robert Altman (1925–2006) for his film, “Beyond Therapy,” among others. In 1980, she won a Critics Prize for best actress for her role in “The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant,” and in 1994, took home a Colombe Prix Plaisir du Théâtre Best Actress award for “The Woman on the Bed.” On stage, she won the Moliere Award for “Colombe” in 1996.
