David Woodley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 27, 2017.
David Woodley was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was the fifth of seven children born to attorney John Woodley and his wife Hazel.

Woodley was a gridiron legend as a quarterback in Louisiana. He was an all-state QB for Byrd High School. He played quarterback for LSU and led the team to a victory in the 1979 Tangerine Bowl.

In the 1980 NFL draft, he was an eighth-round selection of the Miami Dolphins. During his rookie season for the Dolphins, he set a team record for the most pass completions by a rookie quarterback.

During the strike-shortened 1982 NFL season, Woodley led the Dolphins to the Super Bowl against the Washington Redskins. At the time, he was the youngest Super Bowl starting quarterback in NFL history at age 24. Woodley threw a 76-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jimmy Cefalo in the first half but the Redskins won Super Bowl XVII with a 27-17 victory.

Hall of Famer Dan Marino took over the starting quarterback job for the Dolphins during the 1983 season. After that season, Woodley was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He started some games for them during the 1984 and 1985 seasons. He retired before the start of the 1986 season. In 1987, Woodley was traded to the Green Bay Packers but was released shortly after.

Woodley had a career record of 34-18-1. He threw for 48 touchdowns.

Woodley had health issues and died on May 4, 2003, at the age of 44.
