Anita O'Day Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 23 to Nov. 28, 2006.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Anita O'Day, whose sassy renditions of "Honeysuckle Rose," "Sweet Georgia Brown" and other song standards that made her one of the most respected jazz vocalists of the 1940s and '50s, has died. She was 87.

O'Day died in her sleep early Thursday morning at a convalescent hospital in West Hollywood where she was recovering from a bout with pneumonia, said her manager Robbie Cavolina.

"On Tuesday night, she said to me, get me out of here," Cavolina said. "But it didn't happen."

Once known as the "Jezebel of Jazz" for her reckless, drug-induced lifestyle, O'Day lived to sing and she did so from her teen years until this year when she released "Indestructible!"

"All I ever wanted to do is perform," she said in a June 1999 interview with The Associated Press. "When I'm singing, I'm happy. I'm doing what I can do and this is my contribution to life."

Cavolina recently completed a feature film about O'Day and accompanied her to shows and on tours.

"She got to see how many people really loved her at the shows we did, in New York, in London," Cavolina said. "She had come back after all of this time. She really lived a very full and exciting life."

O'Day was born in Chicago, Illinois. She left home at age 12 and often bragged about being "self-made" and never having a singing lesson.

She began her career in her teens and later recorded hits with Stan Kenton and Gene Krupa. Her highly stylized performance of songs like "And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine," "Let Me Off Uptown," "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Sweet Georgia Brown" made her famous the world over.

In her prime, O'Day was described as a scat singer and a natural improviser whose unique interpretations energized the most familiar songs. She inspired many singers, including June Christy and Chris Connor.

Her fame came at a price.

She suffered from a 16-year heroin addiction and an even longer alcohol problem. Wild, drug-related behavior and occasional stints in jail on drug charges earned her the nickname "Jezebel of Jazz."

"I tried everything," she once said. "Curiosity will make you go your own way."

She overdosed many times and on one occasion in the late 1940s, it was almost fatal.

The experience shocked her into giving up drugs, but she continued to drink.

In late 1996, the same year she received a lifetime achievement award from the National Endowment for the Arts, O'Day fell down the stairs of her Hemet, California, home after a drinking binge. She was admitted to a hospital with a broken arm but ended up with severe food poisoning and pneumonia.

She survived the ordeal but her recovery - both physical and emotional - was painful. She left the hospital in a wheelchair and did not walk for nearly a year. Her right hand was paralyzed but worst of all, she said, she had lost her singing voice.

Although she blamed the complications on poor hospital care, the near-death experience convinced O'Day to give up alcohol.

It took nearly a year to get her voice back and start singing again. But once she did, she was right back on stage.

For the last years of her life, O'Day performed at various Los Angeles night spots.

O'Day had no children and no immediate family, Cavolina said.

I began digging Anita when I was 5 or 6 years old, hearing "Let Me Off Uptown" and "Chickery Chick" on the radio. I was able to see Anita several times: at Chicago's Maryland Hotel in 1958-9, at Marty's in NYC in the early 80s, her 50th anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall in 1985, and at Fat Tuesday's in 1991. Had a chance to chat with her and Gordon Brisker at that last gig. I am still digging Anita as much as, perhaps even more than, ever and have recently purchased a few CDs I didn't have as well as the Tokyo DVD. Only Lady Day approaches Anita in my pantheon of jazz singers. Man, how she enriched my musical life!

Anita was arguably the most rhythmically sophisticated singer in the history of jazz. A fantastic, sweet and creative voice. Perhaps not a household name, but truly an American legend.

On Nov 23,2006 I received one of the worst phone calls I've ever received - I was told of your death. The sorrow isn't quite as bad now, but I still think about you. Play your music and watch your DVDs - you're still the greatest!

I just watched a tv program on Anita this week. I was really moved by her improvisational abilities, her beauty and her pizzazz while on stage. Her love for music moved me, and made me want to pass this onto my children, and to continue in my musical journey.

As a VERY young trombonist I was taken into a whole new world of expression. I'm 73 years old and met you when I was 16. My world has been infinitely more wonderful since. I'm now a disabled ARMY vet and I live alone except when I listen to your sweet voice. I've loved you all my life. Rest in peace my sweet-sweet love!

It's been seven years and I remember the phone call telling me of your death as if it were yesterday. The sadness lingers on, but your music still brings great comfort. Gonna' spend the day watching all the videos I have of you.

Anita's music continues to be an inspiration to young artists. Her music is so much a part of who I am as a young musician that I will be performing a tribute concert for Anita in her honor with historical representations of her arrangements for the completion of my graduate degree in vocal jazz studies. I want to share her amazing music and life stories with others so that her legacy may continue on forever.

Anita is incredibly special, there is only one. I'd never heard of her until Sept 2010 when on youtube I happened on her performance in the "Summer's Day" movie. I haven't been the same since that day.
I watched the movie about her, then read her book, they are both wonderful.
Anita and all her songs make me so happy, I listen to her every day. She brought me out of my depression and I'll always owe her so much, maybe my life.
She is an angel who will always be remembered. I want more people to keep discovering her and how special she is!

I have just watched the documentary and it is a superb picture of a dedicated singer--the voice, phraseology, pauses, are not just professionalism at it best, but comes out of her life. I purchased High Time, Hard Times and have found it so brutally honest--what a being gifted by the hand of Creator and tough trials. I hope I can find all the albums and play them in the car and den. My Mother and Father were the same age as Anita. I didn't apprecite Swing and the 30's-40's Jazz music until later in my life. When I discovered Anita I fell in love with her voice and music. Better late than never. I wish I knew then what I know now and I would have made every attempt to see her in person. What a joy to hear the old records by the true greats. My parents were very fortunate to have seen her in her prime.

It is so good to read the warm tributes to Anita the real life person.

I want to share an anecdote about Anita the artist.

The most hard core jazz afficianado I ever knew, who happened to be black, considered Anita O'Day to be one of the two greatest jazz singers ever (the other being Lady Day).

The angels in Heaven are so fortunate to be serenaded by this superb talent.

April 7, 2011

My mother told me she knew Anita because she was married to the golf pro at Biltmore Country Club in Barrington, Illinois. I'm guessing they got to know each other in the early 40's. My Dad, William Dahl was a member of Biltmore and a terrific golfer. Mom told me we once visited Anita at her home in Santa Monica, CA. Mom also told me she saw Anita perform when we lived in the San Francisco area in the 80's. Mom said she was able to go backstage with a young friend to see Anita. I don't know why I wasn't along? I watched a program on tv tonight and now realize what a talent Anita was. I hope to purchase some of her work.

My Mom passed away in 2007.

All down through the years A/D never surrendered her technique, never sang a bad note.
All down through l have modelled my playing on the phrasing and light cadence of those kind of artists.

Anita, Sinatra, Ella, Mose Allison! how could I for get Mose Allison! Not just that but a couple of Canadian singers like Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Gord Lightfoot who were all listening to bob anyhow by that point.

An Anita . . . hope you found that dog.

What an amazing woman. What an amazing voice! I am going to pay my respects by buying everything I can find that she has ever recorded. I recently watched the documentary about Anita and was totally blown away and fascinated by her, her story and her stunning voice. Her voice was pure satin. There was nothing phony about Anita and I appreciated how real she was. My husband is a musician and when I told him about this documentary, his response was, "I have a Gene Krupa record that she sang on" and put it on the turn table and we listened to Drummin Man. Which was fitting because he's a drummer. So little did I know we had this gem in the house and will play it and appreciate and enjoy her voice and talent. She's one of those gifts that only comes along once in a lifetime. God Bless You Anita.

OMG! WOW I was just blown away by watching the doc."Life of a jazz singer" It has been an uplifting experiance learning about this remarkable womans life. So many aspects of her life have a connection to mine, that it has left me to wonder about what it would be like to have been friends with her. I am finding her book and reading at once.

Anita O'Day is the most incredible singer/ Musician/ performer/ spirit/ influence, I have ever heard or seen. A Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, and Anita O'Day only come around once in a life time. That beautiful woman inspired me, and many other people like no one else could. She is the personification of music. I remember her when I was just a kid and not only did I become swept away not only by her voice and beauty, but by her vibe and zest for life. Truly one of the greatest gifts to earth and music that there ever was. I saw her documentary and to see she never stopped singing made me very happy, and I applaud one of the true Queens of music Anita O'Day. Some day there is a postage stamp waiting for your picture. With all my love, Ron Yarbrough, Tustin Ca.

Last evening I watched the Anita O'Day documentary for the second time and enjoyed it even more. The memory of hearing her name was rekindled from my days as a young girl just beginning to work in downtown Chicago's Loop and to date. Rush St and Mr. Kelly's were popular places back then. I very likely could have seen Anita O'Day perform in person. Makes me wonder what was I thinking, and what a great performer I missed. Seeing Miss O'Day as an old woman who probably went largely unnoticed reminds me to look into the eyes of older people and acknowledge them with a hello and a smile. Such rewards come from simple gestures of kindness.

I'm like a lot of other contributors to this blog: I had heard of Anita O'Day but until the documentary I had never really listened to her sing. My husband and I were blown away by her and have listened to her daily since then. My current favorite is "Can't Get Started." Her smoky, silky voice along with her incredible timing and phrasing are to die for. I'm grateful to have discovered her and humbly use her as a role model.

For Anita...You version of
Honeysuckle Rose and others
should be in the "Jazz Hall

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.
