Joyce, my heart goes out to you. You and Jay were wonderful to me. I pray we can meet again someday. Jay has never left my heart.

I first met Jaybird through my Dad who was also a part of Akron radio on WAKR.
Later, when I was working as a publicist at Northfield Park, I would call Jay in the evening to give him the race results.
I'd be all serious - trying to be "professional" .... and at the end of my report - Jay would stop and tell some terribly corny joke that would literally leave me speechless.
Needless to say, it wasn't my finest minute of fame in radio...but Jay always made me laugh.
Even recently, when I'd approach Jay at the annual Akron Bowling Awards dinner and re-introduce myself, he'd shake my hand, make me feel like we were great old friends and I'd walk away smiling.
I'm sure most of the time he never knew who I was...but he always made me feel like he was happy to know me.
To his family - my deepest and heartfelt sympathies.
Akron has had many really great radio personalities that she has called her own...Jay has to be at the top of the list.

i had the pleasure of working with jaybird during my days at wkdd in akron back in the 80's. jay was a very kind man who always took the time out to say hello. every once in awhile jay would grab a cup of coffee and come in and sit in the corner of the wkdd studio and share stories of his career while i would do my evening shift. he had such a great voice and he was one of the most sincere people i have ever met. jay loved akron and akron loved jay. rest in peace my friend. rockin rick allen-akron

Joyce - You have heard from many and here is one more. It has been a delight to know both you and Jaybird - At Riviera Lanes working for 25 yrs with the Pro Bowlers he treated us all as a friend and then he remembered us when you were out eating or shopping. I saw you both at my church spaghetti supper just recently. He remembered my Jack that had also been at Riviera. Jaybird was such a giving man and shared his faith and his talents with us all. You have such great memories and you were so great for him which he appreciated. Blessings to you all.
In Peace - In Faith and in Love!

Dear Drennan Family -- While Akron has lost one of its most iconic figures, we know that you have lost a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. Unfortunately it is becoming more and more difficult to find men who can be described with words such as "integrity" and "character," but these surely fit the life of Jaybird Drennan. His life has not ended but just truly beginning as his absence in body is to be present with the Lord. At the same time, he is a loss to all of you and to the Akron community. Please accept our deepest sympathy. He was truly loved by so many.

Mrs. Drennan & Family-
You are in our prayers at this most difficult time.
Like many young people in Akron my story is the same.
"Jaybird" was the ONLY thing on the radio in our house when we where kids.
I do remember going to the softball games that WSLR did down at Firestone park...we spent alot of summer evenings there and we enjoyed every one.

Mr. Dennan was a great man.
And that voice...

To the Drennan family,
Our prayers go out to you for your great loss. We have seen him at church and other social gatherings in Akron, he was a genuine good old guy. He liked people and it showed in his eyes. His race is done, he has finished the line, The prize is won. May God Bless and keep you safe in his arms. From the Moneypenny`s & Cotton family.

Dear Drennan Family I grew up with the "Jaybird" on WSLR. My favorite story is when Jaybird would open his cups of coffee on air. The noise he made as he opened the styrofoam cup crackled and popped, then he would take a sip slurping and say "That's good coffee." My father used that saying to teach his grandkids to drink coffee. Please know that our loss is heavens gain and my father is slurping coffee with Jaybird now.

I had the opportunity to work with Jaybird at the start of my broadcasting career at WSLR. Jay was one of the most helpful and genuine people I ever had the privilege to work with...I will always recall fondly how how used to greet me when he came in at 5:30am by saying "Philip, muh boy, you be careful driving home...it's a real frog-choker out there!" or something like that.

Jay was also quick to share his experience and his theories about what made for a good broadcaster. Unlike the stereotypical image of a self-centered radio DJ you sometimes see on TV, Jay was the real deal, a real gentleman who treated people with respect.

Mu condolences to his family and friends.

Jaybird is in Heaven now with the Lord.
Whenever he was appearing at the of the Akron Malls or the Summit County Fair, I was always there to enjoy his performance. He was a perfect example what a Christian man should be. Parents never had to worry about their children listening to him on WSLR. His show was always clean. I still remember him "broadscattering" from MacIntyre Chevrolet on Thursday evenings waving and acknowledgiing the Hapyy Horn Honkers". May your family be blessed with Grace from our Almighty Lord at this time.

Dear Drennan Family,

I send my heart felt sympathy's to all of you. When I was a school-girl( a very long time ago, 35-40 yrs ago) I used to wake up to him every morning before I went to school. If by chance I missed his wonderful voice, things just were not right the rest of the day. In all my years, I think that he was my mothers and my favorite voice to hear in the morning.

My thought and prayers are with you all.He was (in my eyes) an Ohio radio icon.

With prayers,

I enjoyed many years of listening to Jay Bird but don't know that I ever saw him and I know I never met him. But a year or two ago when my step-mother and I were entering Cracker Barrel, as we walked by him and his wife, he spoke to my step-mother and then sat down beside us while we waited and talked to us like an old friend. Since his passing I have heard so much about his warmth and ability to make everyone feel they were his friend. That day I was able to experience that warmth of this Christian man. May God richly bless his family.

I had the honor and privilege of meeting Jaybird Drennan for the first time nearly 4 years ago, at the Akron Civic Theatre where he emceed the Akron Derbytown Chorus' annual Barbershop Show every year. His voice is what I'll remember so much...he was so friendly, and so professional in his speaking onstage. This next upcoming annual show with Akron certainly will not the same without hearing his voice as the MC. I was saddened to hear of his death...he was such a good man overall. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Brynette & Family,

I've told you before of how I used to run into your dad at Acme before you and I ever worked together at ALLTEL. What a comforting presence he had to him, so much love in that voice and in those eyes. He and my uncle Bill (Wilbur) Dunn were Akron radio luminaries, now they are luminaries of the highest order, with a signal strength of eternity.
I wish you and your family the joy and comfort of your fond memories and knowing the broadness of the ripples in the pond that your dad created. He was a real treasure!

Kindest sympathies,

To The Drennan Family,

I was privileged to have known Jaybird - dating back to my active Air Force Reserve days while recruiting for the Air Force Academy.

I heard him say over the air one day that his son was a graduate! I wrote him about the role I played for the Academy and he eventually interviewed me (on air) about the about the Academy, his son and the Admissions process.

He was proud to have had a connection with the Air Force.

Jaybird was a devoted individual and a great role model. I surely will miss him and I wish you all the very best memories of him.

May he rest in peace.

I will never forget the good times our families had together fishing in Canada at Archer's Blue Roof Cottages. I will always remember your father "Jaybird" as one who loved good home cooking when we had fried fish, fried potatoes and cornbread.

Like so many, I have fond memories of my Dad listening to Jaybird on the radio while he stood at the kitchen sink, washing dishes. When Jay worked for my Dad at KPIK in Colorado Springs I remember what a terrific person he was to me. Jay always took the time to teach me many of the ethics I've taken through life. I also remember the time when he was working with the Chamber of Commerce JC's chuckwagon show at the Garden of the Gods. One night I was in the audience, minding my own business, when he set it up for the entertainers, and himself, to grab me from the audience and brand my bottom by the roaring fire. Of course, they put a piece of board between my behind and the branding iron, but somehow it got messed up and the board went under my jeans and left a big JC brand on them. I kept those jeans for years and always remembered what a kick Jay got out of it. Jay was a very special man and I am proud to have known him.

In the 1960's I had a Service Station in Colorado Springs and Jaybird used to come to my Station and do remotes when he was with radio station KPIK.When he was there doing remotes the people would come in just to talk with him as they knew he would take the time to talk with them. A great person and am sure he will be dearly missed by the Family. Thanks to another friend from KPIK George James sent me the guest book. May God bless the Family of Jaybird Drennan

Dear Bry:

I am so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. He was so genuine, loving and very, very funny. I remember my grandmother listening to him on the radio when I was a child and then one day I was a part of your family. I think of you often.

My Brother Don and I had the pleasure of playing a few shows with Jaybird when we were kids. He was a true gentleman and a consumate professional. He was also a pretty good magician. My parents and I spent many mornings listening to the sound of stryofoam coffee cups opening. I've also remember Jaybird singing "Snowflake" He will certainly be missed. May the Lord be with you at this time and in the days to come.

Joyce
I will never forget our ride together from Geauga Lake/Sea World. I know that Jay was a wonderful husband and I am so glad that your predition came true.

I will also never forget the time he came into Lois & Hanks and that beautiful, booming voice filled the room and scared poor little Darren to death.

Please know you have my deepest sympathy and that my prayers are with you.

To the family of Jaybird: I worked at WSLR in Akron for several years as traffic reporter and DJ and knew Jay well. He was a sweet wonderful man who always had time for me and others at the station. Once I filled in for his morning show a couple of days as he was stranded in an ice storm while in Texas. He was a dear and gentle man and I loved hearing his stories, listening to him on the radio and just being his friend. I am deeply saddened by his passing. A friend sent me a note yesterday and I am please to have found this way of telling you he made an impression on me for certain and on the thousands he touched every day. Please accept my deepest sympathies because there will never be another "Jaybird" he is in the Wolfman Jack category for certain. It is everyone's loss.
Sincerely Kathy Q That was my name on the station.

What a loss for everyone in Ohio who knew and loved the "Jaybird." I spent many hours onstage at different places with this man, and he was a true professional. I remember how thrilled I was at State Contest for the Ohio Country & Western Music Assn. when I won State Queen and Jaybird was there! I knew I had "arrived!" He will be remembered always in our hearts. My prayers go out to the family at this time.

We were saddened by the news of Jaybird's passing. Both of our parents were loyal listeners to Jaybird as we were growing up! Everytime I think of Jaybird, it brings back many fond childhood memories! He was certainly an icon in the country music industry and will be missed by many! May he rest in peace and be with his loyal fans (including my mom & dad) in Heaven. Peace be with his family and friends.

Words cannot express the love we had for Jay Bird and Joyce. I first met Jay Bird in the lobby of the Hartville Kitchen while I was putting up my banquet sign. I asked him about emceeing my first dinner concert at the Hartville Kitchen with George Younce and Ernie Haase. He was very gracious to do just that. I always enjoyed his wonderful smile and friendliness whenever you saw him. I was fortunate to speak with him and Joyce not too long ago when they were eating here at the restaurant. We know your family will have a great empty spot where Dad, Husband and Grandad lived. Our love and prayers for all of you and thank you for sharing him with us. God bless.
