Jerry Bedingfield Obituary

March 1, 1940 - February 14, 2016
Colonel (Retired) Jerry Ray Bedingfield, 75, of San Antonio, Texas died on Sunday, February 14, 2016. Jerry, devoted son, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, dedicated brother, uncle, godfather is survived by his wife, Lorraine Panek Bedingfield, his daughters Kelly Bedingfield Robles and Nancy Bedingfield, his son Steven Bedingfield, daughter-in-law, Julie Bedingfield, and grandsons Manuel Robles and Nicolas Robles. He is also survived by his brothers Jimmy Bedingfield, Alan Bedingfield, Joe Bedingfield, and sisters Shirley Bedingfield Forton, Gayle Bedingfield Hall, and Becky Bedingfield, along with many nieces and nephews, and a multitude of people who were mentored by, supported by, and encouraged by him. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Danny Bedingfield and Roger Bedingfield, and his sister, Jeannette Bedingfield Williams.
Jerry was born in Bruce, Mississippi, on March 1, 1940 and grew up near Mobile, Alabama.
Jerry is a Viet Nam veteran who began his career in the United States Air Force in 1961. During his 31 years of service, he received many commendations, including the Legion of Merit/1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal/2 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Air Medal/9 Oak Leaf Clusters. Jerry began his career as an enlisted man and entered the Aviation Cadet Program, earning his wings in 1961. He served as navigator aboard multiple aircraft during Viet Nam, flying more than 200 combat missions, before transitioning into Electronic Security. He served with distinction in multiple leadership roles and has served as a mentor to many.

After retirement, Jerry worked as a substitute teacher at Locke Hill Elementary School. He was a gifted artist, carpenter, composer, and musician, and he spent many hours crafting beautiful treasures and serenading his family. He was a clever, mischievous wit who read voraciously and loved to travel and delve into the genealogy of his family. He was constantly planning and preparing for his family, both his biological and chosen, and had a knack for picking just the right gift or project.

His generous spirit and the gifts of his wisdom and overwhelmingly unconditional love will be missed. We who have lost this man encourage you to hug your parents.
There will be a funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church followed by a memorial service at 2:45 p.m. at the National Cemetery at Ft. Sam Houston on Monday, February 29.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider making a donation in Jerry's honor to one of the following organizations: Special Operations Warrior Foundation (specialops.org), Homes for Our Troops (www.hfotusa.org) or Young Life (www.younglife.org).

Reading the guest book comments, it is obvious that Jerry was a talented, loving and caring person. I am sorry that I did not have the chance to get to know him when I was at Vigor.

I used to go to Lockehill and he substituted my classes alot. He was my favorite substitute during my whole 6 years. He would hug me every time I saw him in the hall, and I would see him at church. I will miss him very much.

I worked with Col Bedingfield as an enlisted man at RAF Chicksands in the 1980s, supporting him on occasion during the base exercises as a member of the Command Post team. Once during an exercise we were simulating a chemical attack and he despised (as we all did) wearing the gas mask, which we had to keep on for hours while trying to communicate with other parts of the base. Once we got behind closed doors he told everyone they could take the masks off but had to 'simulate' the muffled mask noises when communicating with the other base contacts. We all knew how to operate with the gear on so it was a real nice break to take it off; we had a laugh and respected him even more for it. I will always remember him.

I regret that I did not get to know Jerry when I attended Vigor (Class '62). I know he surely was a great patriot, and like him I, too, "Touched the Face of GOD" as a USAF Aircrew member. May HE whose face we both touched as we served in different areas of the sky, bless you as a family and may GOD wrap his loving arms around each of you at this time. AIM HIGH, COL. Thank You for your service to our GOD, our nation and to your family.

Dear Lorraine, Nancy, Kelly and Steven,
What an honor it was to serve under your father's command, and also to know each of you personally. Though his time on earth is through, know that his influence will continue on though the Airmen he commanded and mentored, the students whose life he came into contact with, and finally and most importantly your lives!
We are saddened at your loss, but know that your faith will see you through. Prayers of comfort for all!

Was a long time ago that the Col was my commander while stationed in RAF Chicksands. He was as much respected as an individual as a Commander. Sorry to hear of his passing. Our prayers are with Lorraine and the family!

Jerry was gifted in all of the ways noted in his beautiful obituary. I knew him as the much beloved "Mr. B," substitute teacher at Locke Hill Elementary School. I got to know him through the years, and feel fortunate to have been his friend. He cared deeply for his students and was an amazing role model to them. Above all, he loved his family, and I feel that I got to know you through his stories. Lorraine, he always called you "my bride." What a kind, loving, talented man! I will miss him dearly. Goodbye for now, Mr. B!
