ANGUS E. "SCOTTY" MCPHAIL Angus E. "Scotty" McPhail died June 5th, at Palm Gardens Rehab Hospital, in Vero Beach, FL. Scotty, the oldest of five children, was born Nov. 19th, 1915, in Harrison's Corners, Ontario, Canada. His family emigrated to the United States when he was a boy and settled in Saranac Lake, New York. It was in Saranac Lake that he met and married Joan Hathaway, his wife of 53 years. Joan predeceased him in 1993. Joan and Scotty made their home in Elizabethtown, New York, where they raised their three children. He is survived by his sister, Margaret DeLeon of Winter Park, Florida; son Bruce McPhail (Regina) of Lewis, New York; daughter Kathy Lindstadt (Lou) of Vero Beach, Florida, and son Scott McPhail of Vero Beach, Florida. Scotty is also survived by9 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and his loyal and faithful little poodle companion Nikki, who never left his side. Scotty served his country during WWII. After enlisting and basic training he was assigned to Coastal Gunnery and sent to Ft. Stewart, Georgia. He was reclassified to Armor sometime later. His combat time was spent with Patton's 3rd Army as part of a Tank Destroyer Unit. He took part in Patton's "March to the Rhine" and was part of the relief of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he owned and operated a service station for many years. He served his community with many years of loyal service on the Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School Board. He was also a board member for the Elizabethtown Social Center, a facility that serves all ages in learning functions, recreation and sporting activities. Scotty was a lifetime member of The American Legion and The VFW. He was a Kiwanian and a member of the United Church of Christ in Elizabethtown. His great loves were his family, his friends, and his beautiful Adirondack Mountains. A memorial service and celebration of his life is being planned to take place in July in Elizabethtown, New York. I always looked forward to Scotty's winter visits, talking about history. He always had a book in his hands, reading several each week, and Nikki by his side. My thoughts and prayers are with the family for their loss. May his spirit live on in the hearts of many.
