Frederick Walter Stuef

STUEF, Frederick Walter October 23, 1922 ~ November 29, 2013 We are sad to announce the passing of Frederick Walter Stuef on November 29 at West Coast General Hospital in Port Alberni, after a brave struggle with heart issues. He is predeceased by his parents Carl and Frieda Stuef, his wife of 56 years Evlyn in 2004, and his sister Leona Portelance in 2011. He is survived by his children: Donald (Elizabeth) Stuef in Powell River, Kathryn (Chris) Watkins in Yellowknife, Eleanor (Ron) Peterson in Port Alberni, and Kristine Stuef (Steven Thornton) in Toronto; as well as his sister-in-law Margaret Mainwaring of White Rock; 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Walter was born near Bismarck Alberta and lived with his parents in the farming community of Ponoka in his early years. He moved with his family to the Cowichan Valley area in the mid 1930's, where he later met and married the love of his life, Evlyn Joyce Neily, in 1948. In 1952 he moved his young family to the Alberni Valley when he became employed with MacMillan Bloedel as an electrician where he worked until his retirement. Walter was a devoted family man, and was involved with serving his community as a Cub Scout leader in the earlier years. He was also a long-time member of the ELKS service organization, a United Church member, and a loyal NDP supporter. He had many hobbies and interests over the years including motor-biking, dancing, rock and gem hounding, fishing, playing and overhauling accordions and stereo systems. He also enjoyed listening to classical and modern music, playing pool, and going golfing. He especially loved fixing just about anything electrical, telling jokes, and enjoying his home and the lake property with family and friends. We will miss him very much. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service is planned for Wednesday February 12 at 1:00pm at the Alberni Valley United Church in Port Alberni, with a tea to follow. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, a donation to one of Walter's favourite charities would be appreciated: Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Wildlife Federation, Nature Conservancy, ELKS & Royal Purple Fund for Children, the SPCA, or the Alberni Valley United Church.
