Daniel Greenwald Obituary

Dr. Daniel M. Greenwald

Highland Park - Dr. Daniel M. Greenwald, of Highland Park, passed away Sunday, March 21, 2021 at Care One Somerset Valley in Bridgewater. He was 77. Born in Boston, MA, he lived in Philadelphia, PA, Chicago, IL and Fayetteville, NC before moving to Highland Park in 1981.

Daniel grew up in Dorchester, a mixed working-class neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. He loved the older wandering streets and irregular pathways of Boston, the New England accent, and the Boston Red Sox. He lost much of his Boston accent but never forgot the Red Sox, living through the tragedies of 1967, 1975 and 1986, and the special triumphs of 2004, 2007 and 2013.

He attended Maimonides School and graduated from Brookline High School. He got his Bachelor's at MIT, his medical degree from Hahnemann, and his post-graduate training at the University of Illinois in Chicago.

Dr. Greenwald served in the US Army during the Vietnam Era, as a General Medical Officer with the 5th Special Forces Unit, First SF. He was stationed most of the time at Ft. Bragg, NC. Part of his Army experience included parachute training, an odd mixture of thrills and horror.

He spent most of his medical career at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, NJ.

Dr. Greenwald received the Distinguished Life Fellow Award from the American Psychiatric Association. He was former President of the NJ Psychiatric Association in Westfield, and a member of the Physicians for a National Health Plan in Chicago and Health Care Quality Strategies in East Brunswick.

Daniel played chess in his youth, loved to watch Jeopardy and enjoyed music, including baroque, classical, folk and blues and 1950s rock. He took advantage of his retirement to travel often, visiting far flung locales like South Africa, Vietnam, and Bolivia.

He's predeceased by his wife of 29 years, Linda Smith Greenwald (d. 1998).

Surviving are his three sons, Nathaniel of Highland Park, Jeremy of Highland Park, and Stephen of San Francisco, California; his friend and companion, Linda Weltchek of Berkeley Heights, NJ; and three sisters, Ada Jacobowitz of Phoenix, AZ; Judith Bar-Meir of Jerusalem, Israel; and Deborah Greenwald of Lincoln, MA, his twin.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, April 11th, 3:00 pm, at Daniel's residence. Zoom online available -please contact the family. Contributions may be made in Daniel's name to either the National Park Trust, http://parktrust.org/ or the Fountain House, https://www.fountainhouse.org/

I have just learned of Dr Greenwald's passing. My deepest condolences to his family. Dr. Greenwald became my doctor back in 1985 at Muhlenberg Hospital for many years. I am very heartbroken at this time. Thank you Dr. G for being there always for me and your many patients.

I have just learned of his passing. I knew Dan from our work at the New Jersey Psychiatric Association. He was an active and devoted member and chaired a number of committees as well as serving as President. He was kind, caring and well liked by all who knew him. My condolences to his family and friends. He is sorely missed.

I have known Dan for over 50 years. I remember him as a very caring person with a great sense of humor, and, of course, always a Red Sox fan. I will miss hearing from him at the holiday seasons.

While serving in Fayetteville Dr. Greenwald, and some fellow army doctors, set up a free clinic for the local people in an empty store. He was a caring , kind, sensitive, and very insightful human being who acted not just talked.

I am sad to learn that Dan, colleague and friend, has died. His warm smile and sly, quiet sense of humor, his unassuming manner and genuine interest in people and learning, his zest for life and dedication to his patients will all be missed. He served his professional organization, the NJ Psychiatric Association, well as president, and faithfully attended Tri-County Chapter meetings. As chief of psychiatry at Muhlenberg Medical Center, he was wise and empathetic with patients hospitalized there and with their families. I offer my deep condolences to his family and close friends.

I've only just started to know Daniel's son Nathan through work, and was so saddened to hear of Daniel's passing. Nathan's new colleagues at AIG extend their condolences to Nathan and his family. Having a die-hard Red Sox fan for a husband, I could sense that had we known him, Daniel would have been a friend, and I'm sure his loss deeply felt by his family and community. -- Gail Wright, on behalf of AIG Life & Retirement, IR Marketing.

It was a great pleasure working with Dan in the NJ Psychiatric Association, where we both served as officers and president in the 1990's. He was a kind, humanistic person who cared deeply about his patients and the field of psychiatry. I am so sorry to hear of his loss.
