PHYLLIS KELLY Obituary

Phyllis Gouin Kelly died peacefully on March 23, 2012 at the age of 84. Daughter of the late geologist Frank Gouin and Gertrude Gouin, twin to the late Frank L. Gouin, sister to June G. Wood and the late Gayle G. Ritch, Mrs. Kelly was originally from Duncan, Oklahoma, and was a graduate of Oklahoma State University where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. While at OSU, she met and married George E. Kelly whose career led her to Rapid City, SD; Memphis, TN; Potomac, MD; Atlanta, GA; and Germantown, TN. Retirement years brought joyful summers at the couple’s summer home on Togus Pond near Augusta, ME. In each place she called home, Mrs. Kelly actively participated in and contributed to her community. She was a member of Germantown Presbyterian Church where she was named Honorary Life Member of Presbyterian Women. She was also a summer member of the South China Church in South China, Maine. Mrs. Kelly’s numerous volunteer endeavors included many years of service at the Church Health Center in Memphis and several years of teaching knitting to hospitalized expectant mothers at the Baptist Hospital for Women. In addition, Mrs. Kelly’s skilled knitting and innate creativity repeatedly earned her top honors at the annual Windsor Fair in Maine. She was also a long-time member of the Suburban Garden Club where her love and knowledge of flowers continued to thrive. In all of her communities, Mrs. Kelly was known for her gifts of countless hand-knitted baby caps, heart pillows for convalescing mastectomy patients, her own garden flowers, and comforting foods given with love to those who were ill or grieving. She will be missed by many. Mrs. Kelly is survived by George E. Kelly, her husband of 64 years; her sister June G. Wood of Norman, OK; her children Thomas Kelly, Kathleen Kelly Hajack, Patricia Kelly Allen; her sons-in-law Michael Hajack and Paul Allen; her grandchildren Lane Hajack, Jeff Hajack, Mick Hajack and step-grandson Colby Allen. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church Health Center, 1210 Peabody Avenue, Memphis, TN 38104 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

I am saddened to hear of my Aunt Phyl's passing. She was a big help to my Sister Dana and myself during our early years. Especially throughout our Mother's, and her Sister's life ending illness. I also have many memories of her and our families Summer escape on Togus Pd. in Maine. She kept the traditional flowers blooming and the smell of pie baking alive there for many years. A place made so special for me that I have now long made my home near there. With fond and loving memories we all will miss her!

While only knowing her a few short years, she was a very loving a caring person--my son ,Paul Allen, is blessed to have become a part of the Kelly family and we were so happy to have spent time with her on a few occasions--John and Jacquie Allen--Merritt Island, Florida

Psalm 90:10 tells us: "In themselves the days of our years are seventy years; And if because of special mightiness they are eighty years".....May your hearts be filled with loving memories of "happy" times together, as you celebrate a life well-lived!!

My condolences,

I have many fond memories of my Aunt Sill (because I couldn't pronounce my "P"). She lived down the road from us when I was 4 and once I wasn't aloud to go to her house until I could say her name correctly, so I asked if I could go to "Aunt Her House". She always had such fun activities planned for us. I remember being sad when she moved to Atlanta, but we still got to see her every summer in Maine. I spent a month with her in Atlanta the summer after my mother passed away. I came home short 1 tooth but with a lot of fond memories. I will always treasure those memories and will take a walk down memory hall every summer in the family's summer cottage. My children loved her surprise Easter and Halloween packages with all of the colorful decorations. You will forever be in all of our hearts. You were an inspiration to everyone who know you. You will be missed by all. Love, Dana, Jon, Alicia and Brian
