Just learned about Dr. Aue's passing today. My heartfelt sympathy to Missy and the family. It is a tragic loss to his family, the academic community and to all who knew him. Can't imagine for him not being there. I studied under Dr. Maximilian Aue for my Master Degree in German. He was my thesis father, a wonderful and tough professor, who commanded excellence in work and gave us volumes of work and knowledge. As a teaching assistant in the German Dept. at Emory he supervised my work and gave me the academic tools to become a German teacher. Along the way, I send the Emory German Dept. my German students, who became medical doctors. In 2001 I was named the AATG Teacher of the Year for the State of Georgia. I hope you were proud of your student. Thank you, Dr. Aue, for your wonderful guidance, leadership and friendship. When my father tragically passed away, you and Missy were there for me. Both of you were there for me at my wedding. Your daughter being the flower girl and your son the ring bearer. Years later, you told me you were touched to tears when mother sang "Ave Maria" at my wedding. She will sing it again in your memory. I'm sorry, I wasn't there to say good-bye.
You shall always be in our work, hearts and memory. Thank you for making such a contribution and difference in our lives.

I was so sad to hear about the tragic news on Max. Max was such an easy going, kind, gentle, soul, who along with his lovely wife Missy were two of the nicest people I have ever had the privilege of meeting and getting to know.

Yesterday I returned to Emory from vacation and learned of this sad and schocking news. As a staff member there working alongside the German Department for many years, and as a frequent lap swimmer at the Emory gym, I could always count on Max to light up the day with a smile that beamed from the heart. If an institution could possess a soul, one could only hope it'd be a spirit like Max's. I am so sorry for the loss of this treasured member of your, and our, family.

The MBA Club Linz wants to express its deepest condolence about the tragic loss of Max Aue. He initiated together with Gerhard Reber the cooperation with Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria, which lasts for many years now. In this way he offered an unique oportunity to some 50 students to receive an extraordinary education. All of us had huge benefits out of that - personally and professionally and think with gratefulness to him as the founder of that. Great people live on in the great achievements they did and in the hearts of the people affected by these deeds. Kindest regards

Dr. Max Aue was one of my favorite professors at Emory. I accompanied Dr. Aue on the Emory Vienna summer course in 1978. This trip was the greatest experience of my time at Emory and I treasure the memories to this day. Dr. Aue was instrumental in helping all of us adapt quickly to our new foreign surroundings. I'm gratified that the Vienna study program has continued to the present. I wish to extend my deep felt condolences for the family of Dr. Aue.

Like everyone else, I am shocked by the news about Max's accident and death. Our relationship started in 1980 and has kept growing professionally and privately since then. Professionally in our role as pioneers and guardians of the relations between Emory University and the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria; privately we developed mutual respect and a friendship which was an important part of our lives. As we get older, we lose more and more essential life partners and become poorer. So, it is possible to understand the pain of the loss, and how long it will take to deal with the consequences. Missy, Heidi and I hope that we can stay in contact ad will have an opportunity to remember him not only at a geographic distance but also on a personal visit. Our deepest condolence, Gerhard Reber with Heidi

The Vienna study abroad program founded by Dr. Aue changed the course of my life. The single assignment I am most proud of completing in my academic career -- a ten-page paper in German -- was for Dr. Aue's class. When my friends and I were sitting at Einsteins eating lunch, he would come by and we would all chat in German and it was like university is supposed to be. This past year I would see him bounding up and down the stair ways and he always, always had a smile and a kind word for me. I was looking forward to taking another class with him and wanted to talk so much more about his experiences growing up in Austria. I cannot believe this happened, but thank you, Dr. Aue, for everything you have done for me, and I will do my best to carry on your intellectual curiosity and genuine interest in other people in my own life.

Max made me feel welcome from the very beginning when I started at Emory, with his distinct smile, wit, warmth, and intellectual presence. I was privileged to have Max as my office neighbor, always inviting me to his office for a chat on teaching, research, or anything else that mattered. I have learned much from his guidance and mentorship. His kindness and curiosity were unceasing, and his loss is deeply felt in our department.

Max was the most humane and generous of colleagues. He took a vivid interest in my work, dropping relevant articles into my box or under my door, discussing ideas, and reading drafts. He was eager to build intellectual bridges between Yiddish and German-Jewish literature and the literary art of Vienna to which he was so devoted. Just this morning, I came across a footnote expressing my debt to him for a clever connection he'd pointed out. I will miss him sorely as a friend and a scholar.

Missy, I think I'm quoting Rumi when I say, "...and this sadness I feel has taken from me the taste of language," as there are simply no words for this loss. What we would give to have at least one that could somehow console you at this time. We will greatly miss seeing him biking up Cornell and stopping for a quick 'hello.' Cathy and Héctor
