Raymond Wilenzick Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

WILENZICK, Raymond RAYMOND MORRIS WILENZICK Raymond Morris Wilenzick, age 76, Atlanta, died July 25, 2011. Husband of the late Phyllis Glaser Wilenzick. Devoted husband, father, grand-father, and renowned Edison phonograph collector, Ray was a Professor of Physics at Tulane University and then worked as a medical physicist at Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans. Born in Monroe, Louisiana, he was a graduate of Neville High School, then Tulane University and earned his Ph.D. from Duke University in 1962. He married Phyllis in 1963. Ray and Phyllis were real "New Orleanians" but moved to Atlanta six years ago to be near their daughters and several of their grand-children. Ray had a deep passion for antique phonographs -- always looking for them in flea markets, tinkering with them or fixing them in his spare time. There was nothing he liked more than to regale visitors with trivia about this phonograph or that one, or why Edison's cylinders were round and not flat. He was a lifelong member of Temple Sinai in New Orleans and later became an active member of Temple Sinai of Atlanta. Ray and Phyllis travelled avidly, making the most of their retirement. Those who knew them knew that they were opposites in personality but team-mates in life, through and through. They shared 47 happy years of marriage in both New Orleans and Atlanta until Phyllis tragically passed away in April. Both will be missed dearly by their family and friends. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Marc Wilenzick and Jill Zeitlin, Briarcliff Manor, New York; daughter and son-in-law, Wendy Rosen and Daniel Rosen, Alpharetta, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Lauren Sturisky and Selwyn Sturisky, Sandy Springs, Georgia; grandchildren: Haley and Drew Wilenzick; Sarah and Eliana Rosen; Ilana, Adam and Ryan Sturisky. Sign the online guest book at www.edressler.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Sinai, 5645 Dupree Drive, NW, Atlanta, GA 30327; Congregation Temple Sinai, 6227 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70118 or the charity of your choice. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 27th, 2011 at 11 am at Arlington Memorial Park with Rabbis Brad Levenberg, Analia Bortz and Mario Karpuj officiating. Arrangements by Dressler's Jewish Funeral Care, Atlanta (770) 451-4999.

Dear Marc, Lauren, and Wendy,
I was shocked to hear of your dad's death. I had just talked to him on the phone the Friday before. He was in good spirits but, of course, missed your mom. He mentioned that he was going to have by-pass sugary soon because of his angina. We both agreed he would feel much better after the procedure.
Your dad and I were roommates for 4 years at Duke and then colleagues for many more at Tulane. He was a joy to know and his dry humor always brought a smile to my face. I will miss him.

Wen, Lauren and Marc, your Dad was such a great guy, father and granddad! He will be missed. I remember him teaching me an easy trick to calculate numbers on the drive to Gulf Shores one summer. Men at Work were playing on the radio. i like the way your Dad would randomly repeat things ,like we'd say " Oh 'It's a Mistake' by Men at Work is playing, and he'd say slowly, " men at wooork " . funny! take care y'all. love, Adele

To the Wilenzick,
I am sorry for the loss of your mother and father. I knew them both when Ray and I worked together in New Orleans. What a great team Ray and Phyllis made. My thoughts and prayers are with you now and always.

I grew up with Phyllis and loved her honest open chuckle through life, and loved her choice of a team mate and her funny stories about Ray
( the one about finding him lying under the car in the drive way?).

Special thoughts and love from New Orleans, Susan Kierr
