Susan Stern

1930 - 2018

Susan Greenwald Stern (88) passed peacefully on July 25th, 2018. Susan, the daughter of Ruth Lieberman and Lester Greenwald, was born in New York City, New York on June 4th, 1930. Susan was a graduate of Berkshire Hills College. Shortly thereafter, she met the love of her life, Richard Stern to whom she was married for 64 years. In the early 1950's, Richard and Susan left their New England roots and relocated to Atlanta. During the middle 1950's Richard and Susan had three sons, Michael, Scott, and John, who were the center of her life from infancy to the present day. Despite the demands of raising three boys, Susan found the time to volunteer her time in many causes that were important to her during the late 1950's and early 1960's. She volunteered as a Candystriper, served with the Temple Sisterhood, and collected for the American Heart Association. Susan remained an active and accomplished tennis player well into her 60's, and she was one of the original participants that competed in ALTA tournaments on a regular basis. In more recent years she participated in a charity group aptly named "Fundraisers", which selected an important cause each year for which to raise money. Susan remained vital and active to the present day, enjoying swimming, book club meetings, card and other table games, and hosting dinner parties for her family and friends. Susan maintained a wide circle of friends, and all would agree that in a moment of need she was always there to assist, comfort, and be present in any way needed. If Susan was your friend, you would indeed be blessed. After the death of her beloved Richard in 2016, Susan found a useful and satisfying life among her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and many close friends. She continued to take annual trips to her hometown of New York City where she enjoyed Broadway shows and visiting old friends. Susan is survived by her three sons, Michael (Merrill), Scott and John, two grandchildren Lisa (Alex) Fay and Jennifer (Jordan) Adair, and her great-grandchildren, Arden, Eli, Chase, and Zoe. A private family graveside will be held at Arlington Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm, Friday, July 27th at The Temple, 1589 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta, GA 30309.
