Lorraine Powell Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

POWELL, Lorraine LORRAINE HENSCH POWELL Lorraine Hensch Powell was born in Bethpage, NY on June 15th, 1960 to Patricia and Thomas A. Hensch. Lorraine attended the University of South Florida in Tampa. While attending USF she worked at the Don Cesar Beach Resort where she met her husband, Chuck Powell, in 1979. Lorraine and Chuck married on March 6th,1982. The same year Lorraine and Chuck moved to Atlanta to continue their careers in the hospitality industry. Lorraine and Chuck had their daughter, Ali in 1986 and their son, Chase in 1989. That same year, Lorraine co-founded Premier Meetings Inc., a successful hotel site- selection company. Lorraine was the Principal of Premier Meetings for 21 years. Lorraine was also a valued member of the Georgia Chapter of Meeting Professionals International for 24 years. She served as the chapter's President from July 1992 to June 1993 and served on or chaired several committees. Though many past presidents drifted away from the organization, Lorraine maintained her passion for membership and member care. She served for many years as the Chair of the Membership Orientation Committee. Lorraine's company Premier Meetings sponsored GaMPI's Shining Star Award, which recognizes members who make extraordinary efforts on behalf of the organization. She used her impact and influence within GAMPI and the hospitality community to garner support for the annual Atlanta Ovarian Cancer walk, a fundraiser for the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. Lorraine's active support and involvement resulted in her winning several GAMPI awards including the Hayward C. Cox, Jr. Continuing Quality Award and the Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award, the chapter's most prestigious honor. When Lorraine was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she put her boundless energy, focus and determination to work, serving as an active member of the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) culminating in her serving as a Member at Large on the GOCA Board. As a patient of Southeastern Gynecological Oncology (SEGO), Lorraine also participated in SEGO's Buddy program, providing patient-to-patient coping support for fellow SEGO patients in need. Lorraine always put her family, friends and even acquaintances before herself no matter the task at hand. She was a passionate volunteer and parishioner at her home parish of St. Ann's in Marietta. Lorraine never once complained of her illness and fought with the courage and strength of a warrior. Lorraine's brave battle ended on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011. She continues to and will always be an inspiration of selfless love and courageous hope. In lieu of flowers, Lorraine's family requests that donations be made to the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (www.gaovariancancer.org). The Funeral Mass will be held at 11am on Wednesday March 30th at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 4905 Roswell Road Marietta.

Chuck, Lorraine and I worked very closely together during the last 5 years at GaMPI ... we even co-sponsored the Shining Star Award which she so enthusiastically endorsed. That was Lorraine's way, to reach out as a confident and caring leader to engage folks and help them feel valued. Her gentleness and genuine smile let us know immediately that she was someone we could trust and count on. I will miss her everyday, and I will also celebrate having had the opportunity to have her in my life. You and the kids have a much deeper understanding of her strength, love and compassion. I hope that you know we care, and that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mrs. Powell. I did not know Mrs. Powell but I have loss a dear father in death. I find much comfort from the Bible where it assures us that "Our Heavenly Father is near to those that are broken at heart and those who are crushed in spirit he saves." May your wonderful memories always bring joy to your hearts and smiles to your faces.

Lorraine and I have been business associates since 2004 and in December 2008 she and I took a trip to Puerto Rico together. She was so kind and so much fun and as I was looking on H M Patterson for another friend who passed away early this week I was shocked and sadden to see of Lorraine's passing. She was a tower fo courage and I will miss our talks.

Chuck and Family

I was so saddened to hear about Lorraine. Her beautiful smile is what I will "always remember" about her. And what a handsome couple I always thought about you both....then when the babies started to come. I thought, "They are a perfect family, full of love". I know that Lorraine loved deeply and she will love each of you enternally. I'm thinking of you.

Chuck and family, I only knew Lorraine for a brief time. She attended a Chemoflage meeting with her friend Debbie Cohan. After the meeting and her first chemo treatments, she donated many pieces of jewelry to Chemoflage, so I could give them as door prizes to the patients I saw each month. May her wonderful memories be a blessing to you and your family. Cookie Aftergut, founder of Chemoflage

Dear Chuck and Family,

Many years ago I had the pleasure of having Lorraine attend a sales seminar that I facilitated. She was extremely gracious in her kind comments. We would bump into each other at various business functions and she would always go out of her way to communicate and ask how things were going. She lit up a room with her personality and she will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. I pray that her legacy of excellence will be carried on by her children. God bless her.

To The Family Of Mrs.Lorraine Powell;
My prayers are with you and your family. No one knows how deep your sadness is, but, I do know that you have lost a Wife, Mother, Sister and a dear friend. She was a very giving person, in the fact that she volunteered for The Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance, and was an invaluable member. She was a true fighter, a positive person, and a role model for us all. What a loving and caring Wife, Mother, Sister and friend. May the God of comfort, continue to be with you and your family. The scripture at 2 Corinthians 1:3,4., has brought me comfort, it says : 3Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort
 4Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
May this scripture, and the wonderful positive memories that you have, comfort your family, through these hard days, and those to come.
Sincerely,

Naima Tinsley

Mr. C.P.
I have such fond memories about Lorraine Powell, be it at your house during the holiday parties, her visit to the office or her unforgettable generous visit to my house after Katrina when she found out that many of my family members from New Orleans have moved in with me. She was always ready to help and be of service. I was fortunate to have known her for many years. She was truly an amazing, kind, genuine and loving person. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Ali and Chase. May your memories bring you comfort.

Lorraine was a bundle of compassion and positive energy. As a board member of the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) she was an advocate for ovarian cancer education and awareness and was willing to give of herself to assist others facing the same journey she was on. She will be greatly missed as a friend and a partner in the GOCA mission. Our thoughts are with Chuck, Ali, and Chase.
