Henry MURPHY Obituary

MURPHY, II, Henry HENRY (HANK) JOSEPH MURPHY II July 25, 1935 - February 11, 2014 Hank Murphy passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 and was surrounded by his wife, children and sons-in-law. Hank was an affable man who loved his family, friends and work, and he gave 110% in all three areas. Hank was a native of Chicago and after completing high school there, he joined the 82nd Airborne and spent two years in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He then became the first in his family to attend college and proudly entered Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, IN where he was a member of the football team . He was a 4.0 Dean's list student all four years, played middle line-backer and center and was nominated as a small college All -American. Upon graduation, Hank was recruited to the headquarters location of Arthur Andersen in Chicago, and he spent eleven years there prior to transferring to the Atlanta office to help to develop business in one of the firm's growing offices. Hank became a partner with Andersen in 1973, and he specialized in the areas of real estate and banking. In 1989, he helped to start up the Litigation Support Group, a new specialty service for the firm. He built up a premiere practice group in litigation support and became a nationally sought-after speaker who regularly addressed other groups in this area. Though Hank very much relished the nature of his work, he always received the most satisfaction from mentoring and developing new talent within the firm, and staff members enjoyed working on his engagements. Hank retired from Andersen in 1996 but went on to sit on several Boards and completed numerous consulting roles as interim CEO for companies in turn-around situations. In his final two years, Hank enjoyed consulting work with two firms in Atlanta, he helped organize a professional symposium in October, 2013, and continued taking certification classes. All his life, he enjoyed supporting our troops in a manifold of capacities. Hank lived the fullest of lives and was described often as having a "larger than life persona." He was completely self made, had a brilliant, beautiful mind, an indefatigable spirit, and an enormous heart, especially for the underdog and/or those down on their luck. He was a true Renaissance man, with great capacity and intellect for so many different interests and passions-reading, the arts, music, gardening, history, and of course his beloved sports, including golf and tennis. His loyalty, devotion and "can do spirit" were legendary. He never gave up on anybody or anything, and was usually the "last man standing" in any situation. Strength, honor, passion and competence are just a few of the words that capture his essence, not to mention he had a wicked sense of humor and love of a good joke. Over the years, perhaps his single greatest joy that kept his "Irish eyes smiling" was his grandchildren. Hank adored each and every one of his ten, and treasured trips to Disney World and the beach with them, as well as supporting them in all of their individual pursuits. His children and grandchildren had a deep and special bond with Hank and were richly blessed to know and love him dearly. Hank was very personally and professionally fulfilled and was loved by so many. He was one of a kind and a "life force" to all. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marilyn , along with their four children (Laura Murphy Trenerry, Todd Murphy, Gina Murphy Solomon and Henry Murphy III), and their spouses, his grandchildren, and his beloved four legged "fifth child", Murph. A memorial service celebrating Hank's life will be held on Saturday, February 15, at 1:00 pm at Johnsons Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked all donations or gifts kindly be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project in his honor.

My greatest BRAGGING RIGHTS in this world: "Hank Murphy is my dad!" And the phrase, "My dad can beat up your dad!" We sure do appreciate all the warm sentiments and kind well-wishes; however, please don't feel sorry for we, his family, left behind. Although he is sorely missed. We feel sorry for you if you never had a dad like ours. If you're familiar with the story of "The Prodigal Son" found in the Gospel of Luke... the father in that parable was much like my dad, except we repeated that scenario about 7 times throughout my life. I sure do miss him, and cherish his memory. The BEST thing I know to do, is try to be like him, and always be the man he taught me to be.
I know Heaven is a richer, more colorful, more wonderful place now that "Pop" is there, and I look forward to seeing him in the Son-light of the Spirit, with the angels, all the Saints and God our Father and Jesus Christ! ...He ran a good race!

May you have the love of God, the grace of Jesus and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit!
~~~~seA ya in the Son!~~~
To the Family and many Friends of Hank Murphy: Deepest, deepest, sympathies to you and yours on your lose.
“Strength, honor, passion and competence are just a few of the words that capture his essence, not to mention he had a wicked sense of humor and love of a good joke.” After these wonderfully descriptive words in his obituary, I am left wordless to add anything, except perhaps these: compassion – compassion for his fellow man – and empathy. Hank had both of these qualities in abundance. All who met him, including me late in his life, loved him. His wisdom simulated the mind, and his humor delighted soul. I was the beneficiary of both. Surely, surely, he is in the embrace of a loving God, who has whispered in this ear, “Well done, thy good and faithful servant.”
God Hank and all of you.
Dear Murphy's,
I was shocked to learn of Hank's passing. I loved his indefatigable sense of humor. I know Owen was waiting for him with open arms and am sure they are cracking jokes about a few politicians as we speak.
I remember Hank from our days in the Chicago office. Hank was older than I, but he always gave me encouragement and I always enjoyed being with him and laughing with him. He was a great partner.
