Michael GILMARTIN Obituary

GILMARTIN, Michael J. Michael J. Gilmartin passed away on May 17 at the age of 65. Michael was a well-known and highly respected woodworker and furniture designer in Atlanta for nearly 40 years. Known specifically for 'The Gilmartin Chair', an award winning contemporary rocker carved from marine-fir plywood, Michael's works are in the permanent collections of several renown art museums, including the High Museum of Art, The Mint Museum (Charlotte, NC), The Brooklyn Museum of Art (Brooklyn NY), and Mobile Museum of Art (Mobile, Ala.) He was curator for one of the former Museum of Design Atlanta's most successful shows, "Talking Furniture Design: The Language of Contemporary Southeastern Artisans," among the featured artists was the Honorable Jimmy Carter. A skilled craftsman and artist, Michael was exhibited nationally in numerous galleries and special exhibitions, and his work is prized by collectors throughout the United States, Japan and South America. A native New Yorker, Michael was a graduate of Chaminade High School, Binghamton University, and SUNY Buffalo where he earned his MBA. He also attended Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. Michael was a member of a large and gregarious family. He was pre-deceased by his father, James. He leaves behind his mother, Adelaide; sisters Christine Cavanaugh (Thomas), Eileen Gilmartin (David Lavallee), and Dorothy Acquino (Dominick); brothers Bob and Jim (Ann). He so enjoyed his nephews, niece, step-nephews and step-niece and his many grand nephews and grand nieces. He particularly took great pleasure in the company of his numerous artist friends, colleagues, neighbors and clients. A memorial service celebrating Michael's life and talents will be held at a later date.

I am truly sorry to hear of the passing of Michael Gilmartin, an older brother of one of my best childhood and high school chums, Bobby. Of course I knew Michael and was aware of his extreme talent wonderful imagination that he put into his creations. I remember once attending a show of his at Lincoln Center in NY with Bobby and a few other friends and, as I recall Michael had another artist working with him at the time. Both were brilliant artists and their pieces literally enthralled those who viewed them.

Although I haven't seen him or Bobby for many years, I will always remember Michael's generous spirit, thoughtfulness, and sense of humor. I send my heartfelt condolences to his brothers, sisters, and Mom.

Sincerely, Armand Circharo, Nashua, NH

We rented space on English Ave in the 90s when we opened our business and Michael occupied the adjoining office for his studio.!Carl and I regularly dropped in talking sports , art and a lot of politics ( for which thankfully, we mostly agreed) we kept in tough for many years and I last spoke with him hoping he would join us for Super Bowl .
This note is for Eileen... Do you recall coming to NY meeting Michael for my grandfather's art exhibition at the ACA gallery in 1999 ... My aunt treated us all to a dinner at the 21 and I believe you and your husband joined us. Michael was very generous in his advise as to how best further CK Chatterton's reputation. I he visited us in Maine one summer where iwas sure he should show his creations.
We are so shocked and saddened... A wonderful artist and generous promoter. How he enjoyed having students come to his studio for tours and talks. you are miss Michael and our lives were enriched for knowing you. I hope this sight will post memorial plans or donations in lieu of.
Our condolences to his wonderful family of whom he spoke about so
fondly.

I knew Michael for over 25 years, admired his work, enjoyed his kindness, and over the years,
put together a good collection of his pieces.
His heart could be seen in each piece and one could identify his work at a glance. It was like him, different, strong, and artful. How good it was to visit his shop and just talk about work & life. He will be sorely missed!
RIP Michael as I rock in your chair remembering you.
