Dennis Corbett Obituary

Corbett, Dennis Patrick
70, of Peoria, AZ died July 24, 2012 after a long battle with cancer. He was born March 29, 1942 in Detroit, MI. After graduating from Cody High School, Dennis served in the US Air Force as a nuclear weapons specialist. Following military service he joined United Airlines, first in Detroit and then San Francisco. During his 30 year career with United, he was recognized for outstanding performance as customer service representative. Dennis loved working with people, proactively solving problems, and always responding to their needs with sensitivity and a great sense of humor. He was promoted to a supervisory position and then to Service Director where he trained other employees to provide exemplary service to United customers. In his spare time Dennis enjoyed golfing and running marathons and was an avid WWII history buff. Over the years, he developed another interest as he watched the work of his twin sister, a special education teacher. Shortly after retiring and moving to Peoria in 1995, Dennis decided to combine this interest and his athletic skills as a volunteer track coach with the Peoria Special Olympics. He not only coached many children and young adults in his 20 year tenure with Special Olympics, but he became a tireless fund raiser. Dennis organized the TEAM Peoria Special Olympic Golf Tournament which raised over $100,000 and spearheaded other fund raising activities on an annual basis. He was named Volunteer of the Year by the city of Peoria and then by Maricopa County. He was honored at the state level as Arizona Special Olympics Volunteer of the Year in 2002. Dennis is survived by his lifelong friend and roommate Anthony Beafore, brothers Robert of Dearborn Heights, MI and Michael of Livonia, MI, sister Kathy of St. Clair,MI, dear friends Bonnie Kirk of Peoria, Mary Peck and Catherine Beafore, long term mentee Sean Belprey of Apache Junction, and many nieces and nephews. Twin sister Diane Corbett preceded him in death. A private service will be held for family and friends at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to the Peoria Special Olympics Program.
