Larry Miller Obituary

Larry Don Miller

Phoenix - Larry passed into the presence of his Lord on March 21, 2018 at the Sherman Hospice of the Valley House. Larry was born on June 19, 1937 the son of Arthur & Bernice Miller in Topeka, Kansas. He is survived by his wife Nancy, a son Larry Don (wife Kami and their son Kyle) of Hailey, Idaho and daughter Kathy of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

At the University of Kansas, he completed an Engineering degree and was signed by the LA Dodgers. He served as an officer in the U.S. Artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma before reporting to the Dodgers in 1964 and was then traded to the New York Mets where he played in 1965 and 1966. His claim to fame was as the last pitcher Casey Stengil took out of a game. He retired from baseball in 67, bought a home in Phoenix and completed a Masters' degree in Engineering at ASU.

For the past 30 years Larry worked as a Management Consultant on major construction projects. His Partnering Seminars resulted in major awards and success on projects such as the Hoover Dam By-Pass Bridge. For over 20 years Larry helped at Serendipity Stables, which he and Nancy owned and ran in their back yard. He served several years on the Boys Brigade program at Desert Springs Bible Church, tutoring at Madison School District, coaching youth for Major League Baseball Alumni, volunteering for Democrats and serving at Scottsdale Bible Church. Please join friends and family for a celebration of life service at the Scottsdale Bible Chapel on April 14 at 10am, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to House of Refuge Sunnyslope, 9835 North 7th St, Phoenix, AZ 85020.

Our Engineering firm used Larry to provide partnering services on several multimillion dollar construction reclamation projects in NW Wyoming. Funny, quick witted, and excellent at his trade. His Love for family and his faith was inspiring to me personally. Loved his pro pitching stories!

Sad news, I ran into Larry on a flight to Indianapolis, where he was participating in a study. We had a great talk, I remembered him from his playing days. The years he was active were the years I really followed the game. Wish I could have talked with him more. Love the fact he was the last pitcher Casey took out of a game.

As children, Larry was my neighbor across the street. We used to have lots of fun with other neighborhood kids playing in the street (and sometimes squabbles). But I have a precious memory of visiting Larry during one of our furloughs from Brazil. He was a dear man. My condolences go out to his family members.

Our family became close to the Miller family while Larry and I played baseball together. Great memories. My condolences to the entire family.
