Barbara Abernethy Obituary
Barbara H. Abernethy, 92, passed away in Phoenix on June 1, 2013. She was born February 15, 1921 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Dr. Roy Wallace and Hazel Allgeo Heath. She married John Russell Abernethy on November 10, 1945 in Kalamazoo before moving to Phoenix, AZ in 1948. Barbara attended Kalamazoo College and graduated from Western Michigan University. She taught kindergarten in Kalamazoo and then second grade in Arizona's Alhambra School District for 29 years, retiring in 1987. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1977; her son, John Abernethy, Jr. in 2012; her brother, Dr. Frank Heath and sister, Alberta Heath. She is survived by two daughters, Helen (Robert) Frantz of Scottsdale, AZ and Barbara (Gary Courtright) Abernethy of Edwards, IL; grandchildren, Brian (Vicky) Frantz and Erica Frantz; great-grandchildren, Shad and Nyah Frantz, as well as a niece and three nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff of Royal Palm Assisted Living for providing 12 years of care for Barbara. A memorial service and reception will be held 11AM, Friday, July 12, 2013 at Hansen Desert Hills Chapel, 6500 E. Bell Rd., Scottsdale. Donations in her memory may be made to Alhambra Foundation for the Future, 4510 N. 37th Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85019, or to a charity of your choice. Mrs. Abernethy was my second grade teacher at Alhambra Elementary School on NW Grand Avenue. This would have been in 1958 or 1959. She was my older brother second grade teacher as well. I have my class picture which was taken around St Patrick's Day as I was wearing a paper clover pinned to my shirt. My class picture and handwriting certificates are in my album. My memories are all good.

Mrs. Abernethy was my first teacher I had at my new school when my family and I moved out here from West Virginia.
I will never forget her kindness and patience,she was a lovely woman.Godspeed, you've earned your wings and God bless.
