Mary Reed Obituary

Reed, Mary Elizabeth (Warner)
94 passed away on April 24, 2014 at her home in Scottsdale. Mary was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania March 20, 1920 to Jacob R. and Elizabeth C. Warner. She was an alumna of Warren G. Harding High School, Warren, Ohio, Connecticut College for Women, New London, Connecticut and Lake Erie College for Women, Painesville, Ohio. She married J. Harry Reed, Sr. May 12, 1939. He preceded her in death January 8, 1973. She is survived by her children Patricia Ann Knecht (James), Nancy Reed McAuliffe (Daniel), James H. Reed, Jr. (Melodie), Mary Constance Sedgley (Ronald), Eight Grandchildren and Eighteen Great Grandchildren. A longtime resident of Warren, Ohio, Mary was active in Parent-Teacher Organizations, the Women's Auxiliary of Trumbull Memorial Hospital and as a two time cancer survivor served as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She was also a parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church and St. James Catholic Church, and was a member of Trumbull Country Club and the Youngstown Club. Mary was an avid bridge player and member of two bridge clubs. She and her husband greatly enjoyed the social aspect of bowling and organized a mixed bowling league. They bowled in the league until his death in 1973. They also enjoyed living near water and owned a summer home for 24 years on Lake Erie at Conneaut, Ohio, where they spent every summer from the end of the school year until Labor Day. At their homes in Warren and Conneaut they were known for entertaining family, friends and business associates. After her husband's death in 1973 Mary began spending winters with her daughter Nancy and family in Scottsdale, AZ. She moved to Scottsdale permanently in 1986. In Scottsdale she was a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, a board member of the Seville Park Homeowner's Association and member of the Florence Crittenton Auxiliary. Mary was a lifelong dog lover. Whether it was a Wire Fox Terrier, Cocker Spaniel, Airedale, Irish Setter, Collie, Peek-a-Poo or Pekingese, Mary loved all dogs. In Seville Park she was known for her twice daily dog walks where she greeted her neighbors and dog owners with their dogs along her way. She always carried treats for all the dogs she met throughout the neighborhood. Mary enjoyed art and theater. From the Kenley Players at Packard Music Hall in Warren to Broadway Productions at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and local productions at Desert Stages Theatre to exhibits at the Phoenix Art Museum and local art galleries, Mary enjoyed many aspects of the arts. She was also an enthusiastic sports fan. She rooted for her hometown Pittsburgh Steelers, the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks. An outgoing person, Mary made friends easily. She was very fortunate to have the friendship and support of her immediate neighbors while also having a wide circle of friends. She was known for her annual birthday brunches and quinquennial birthday parties and dinners that were planned and hosted by her daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Dan McAuliffe. In her later years she enjoyed almost nightly dinners at Randy's Restaurant on Chaparral Road in Scottsdale where she loved to interact with the waitresses and Tony the manager. She also enjoyed people watching the "Snow Birds" and talking with the other regulars. Mary's family would like to thank her dedicated caregivers: Mela Buckman, Verna Malone, Vicki Stoltz and Roberta Townley. Also, thanks to Hospice of the Valley, especially Deb Tappe, RN and Cristine Topping, LMSW. A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 7655 E. Main Street, Scottsdale on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at 10:00 A.M with a reception immediately following the mass. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street Phoenix, AZ 85014 or AZ Humane Society, 1521 W. Dobbins Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85041. Arrangements entrusted to Messinger Indian School Mortuary.
