Gertrude Carey Obituary

Gertrude Carey

Scottsdale - CAREY, Gertrude Louise (Kosick), 92, of Scottsdale, Arizona passed away on 12/22/17. Gert was born May 12, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois, and was the only child of Louis and Frances (Lunn) Kosick. Gert attended Saint Alphonsus Church in Chicago, where she married Robert Carey on Nov 22, 1945. They soon moved to the suburb of Franklin Park, where they had four children. Due to Bob's illness, they moved in 1964 to Scottsdale, Arizona. Gert lived in Scottsdale until her death. Having become the principal provider for her family, Gert worked for twenty-three years in clerical positions at Scottsdale High School, Coronado High School, and at the Scottsdale School District's central office, while also raising her children and caring for her husband and her parents. In 1988, two years after Bob's death, Gert retired from work and devoted herself to her faith, friends, and family. Every morning she spent time in personal prayer. She had a particular devotion to the rosary and was a long-time member of Our Lady's Sodality at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Scottsdale. For seventeen years she also volunteered at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital. She gave generously to several charities, especially to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital. She was an avid and skilled bridge-player, meeting often with old friends and making new ones. More than anything else, she loved her family and having them close to her. Gert is survived by her children: Rev. Michael Carey, OP of Berkeley, CA; Gerald (Dorotha Young) Carey of Scottsdale, AZ; Pamela (Joseph) Zimmerman of Scottsdale, AZ; and Daniel (Margaret Kane) Carey of Scottsdale, AZ; six grandchildren: Joseph Zimmerman II of Scottsdale, AZ; Michael (Shirin Ansari) Zimmerman of Scottsdale, AZ; Zachary Carey of Tempe, AZ; Ashley (Robert) Majorek of Gilbert, AZ; Haley (Kyle) Corbo, of Queen Creek, AZ; and Riley Carey of Gilbert, AZ; five great-grandchildren: Odette Zimmerman, Kaila Majorek, Lincoln Majorek, Tyson Majorek, and Mila Corbo. Viewing will take place at Messinger Mortuary (7601 E. Indian School Rd., Scottsdale, AZ) on Dec. 28, 2017 beginning at 5:30p.m., with a Vigil Service following at 7:00p.m. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church (7655 E. Main St., Scottsdale, AZ) on Dec. 29, 2017 at 10:00a.m. followed by a funeral procession to St. Francis Cemetery (2033 N. 48th St., Phoenix, AZ). A reception at Our Lady of Perpetual Help will follow the graveside service. Donations in Gert's memory may be made to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
