Although we didn't know Matt, we know how much he meant to all of you, and how blessed you all were to have known him as, son, nephew, cousin, friend, and father. Our heart goes out to you in this terrible time of confusion, and hurt. Only God knows why. Only God can heal the grief you are feeling. Only God can assure you that Matt is at peace. Only God can help you through this terrible time. May the days ahead become easier, one at a time, with the help of your family and friends.

I remember his face. His gaze was intelligent, open and quizzical, indicating depth of thinking, feeling, wondering, and not-yet-fulfilled desire. Artistic, trained, accomplished on the classical guitar. Sensitive, tapping into deep emotion. Reserved and quiet. Good looking. Dry humor. A son any parent would be proud to call their own.
Being a second son myself, I felt an affinity to Matthew. Being a musician, I sensed his talent and conviction. Being a music director, I respected his integrity and commitment. I enjoyed all of my interactions with him, as few as they were, and I can attest that his presence as an instrumentalist at parish masses was clearly appreciated. He always left me waiting and wishing for more.
As a parent, I have always admired the entire Hershfeld family. In addition to Matthew, I have worked with Michael over many years, and I have observed Terri in her musical contributions to the parish. Of course, Don and Eve have given faithful service to the choir for decades, and I will treasure those memories as well.
But as a parent who has lost a child, I mourn with them with an all-too-familiar sense of the chasm that has opened in their lives. No matter the age of the child, he is always his mother's baby, with a beauty of face and innocence of life that touches them all. Nothing can ever fill that void, nothing can ever heal the wound, nothing can ever make it stop hurting. Carole and I know, our sons and daughters know, and we can only offer love, prayers, and whatever support we can for all concerned.
Matthew, we believe that life has not ended for you but merely changed. We embrace you in faith and love in the communion of the saints. May the angels lead you into paradise; may the martyrs come to welcome you and take you to the holy city, the new and eternal Jerusalem. May the choir of angels welcome you where Lazarus is poor no longer, may you have eternal rest.

To the Hershfeld Family, my memories of Matt are abundant, from family gatherings and social events over the years. His warmth, kindness and smile was one of a kind. I know he will be sorely missed, yet I also know our faith gives us strength through love eternal. He will be your angel until you are joined together again. May you be wrapped in the comfort and the grace of God. With heartfelt sympathy~
