GIAN SARUP

Because I was Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciencesc for three decades, I had the opportunity to work with many dozens of department chairs. I knew Gian when we were both graduate students at Penn State studying under Muzafer Sherif. There were five of us in that group, I was the youngest and Gian, the senior. He was the one we all looked up to for guidance and advice. In any group like that, there is a good degree of insecurity and incipient rivalry. It was Gian who set the tone which kept all of us cordial, professional and focused. Gian will always be a special memory that brightens my thoughts of those times.

Gian was my first office mate when I came to NIU in 1979. Lacking professional grace and having a knack for exceeding courtesy norms
in my interactions with others, Gian had the unenviable task of calming me down in times

Gian Sarup was a valued colleague and deeply kind man. I had the privilege of working with him when he chaired our Sociology department and I served as associate dean. He was thoughtful and compassionate. I offer my sincere condolences to his wife and family.

Gian was the Chair of the Department of Sociology when I was hired in 1996. He was a warm, reasonable man. I appreciated him very much. I send my heartfelt condolences to his family.
