Because I was Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciencesc for three decades, I had the opportunity to work with many dozens of department chairs. Without a doubt, Professor Gian Sarup was among the most kind, thoughtful , and considerate of all the chairs. Sociology chairs were among those who had to administer limited admission programs, something none of them liked but which was nonetheless essential because many students came to the field after experimenting with other disciplines in the social sciences and in other colleges at Northern. Although many were interesting in criminology, there wasn´t real departmental support for letting that subdiscipline take over the whole department - which at one point many feared. Professor Sarup managed difficult issues with a calm, kind demeanor that wasn´t always shared by his colleagues. But he led the department through difficult times with a good deal of equanimity and always with fairness. His kind of leadership is not always understood but should always be valued. Gian Sarup was a bright and very kind man; my thoughts are with his family.

I knew Gian when we were both graduate students at Penn State studying under Muzafer Sherif. There were five of us in that group, I was the youngest and Gian, the senior. He was the one we all looked up to for guidance and advice. In any group like that, there is a good degree of insecurity and incipient rivalry. It was Gian who set the tone which kept all of us cordial, professional and focused. Gian will always be a special memory that brightens my thoughts of those times.

Gian was my first office mate when I came to NIU in 1979. Lacking professional grace and having a knack for exceeding courtesy norms
in my interactions with others, Gian had the unenviable task of calming me down in times
of conflict with others, mentoring me in department norms, and by becoming my primary role model. Unfortunately, too often I forgot
his lessons, but he never gave up. Gian was
instrumental in my professional survival in those early years. I appreciated his kindness, his patience, and his willingness to stick with the task. I would periodically thank him, and he would just shake his head
and give me his gentle smile and say with a chuckle, "you're coming, slow but sure."
He was always able to evoke a smile in me
(and others) when we were "in a mood," and
he was adept at asking the right questions to make us re-examine positions of which we were absolutely certain. I, and probably many others, owe much of our success to Gian.

So, Gian, one more time: THANKS FOR ALL YOU DID FOR ALL OF US, both as friend, as colleague, and as a gentle guiding force in our lives.

Gian Sarup was a valued colleague and deeply kind man. I had the privilege of working with him when he chaired our Sociology department and I served as associate dean. He was thoughtful and compassionate. I offer my sincere condolences to his wife and family.

Gian Sarup was not only an accomplished social psychologist but an excellent, supportive colleague. He was always fair, helpful, and balanced in all his teaching, scholarly, and collegial contributions. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and worked with him.

Gian was the Chair of the Department of Sociology when I was hired in 1996. He was a warm, reasonable man. I appreciated him very much. I send my heartfelt condolences to his family.
