Martha S. McCarthy (nee Schmitt) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2024 at the age 83. Born November 18th, 1940 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late George and Helen (nee Hansman) Schmitt. Martha was raised on a farm in Sharonville where she would return after living for many years in Green Township as a former parishioner of Our Lady of Visitation. She graduated from Mount Notre Dame High School and completed her bachelor's degree from Mount St. Joseph University. Martha began her graduate studies on scholarship at Catholic University in Washington D.C. and completed her master’s degree at The Ohio State University. Her parents were founding parishioners of St. Michael Catholic Church and she faithfully continued their legacy.
On September 28th, 1963, Martha married her beloved husband of nearly 61 years, Barry K. McCarthy. Together, they raised their nine children; Susan McCarthy, Ellen Mangione, Kevin (Melissa) McCarthy, Julie McCarthy, B. Kyle McCarthy, Megan (Brian) Smyth, Maura McCarthy, Casey (Heather) McCarthy, and Corey (Annie) McCarthy. Martha cherished her role as “More Mom”, “Grandma”, and “Mammy” to her dear grandchildren; Kerry McCarthy, Keegan (Candice) McCarthy, Maryah Mangione, Steven Mangione, Tony Mangione, Kavanaugh (Beth) McCarthy, Mackenzie McCarthy, Kailleigh McCarthy, Marin Smyth, Ryland Smyth, Weston Smyth, Owen McCarthy, Cierra McCarthy, Liam McCarthy, Ena McCarthy, Finn McCarthy, Nora McCarthy, and Grady McCarthy; great grandchildren; Perry McCarthy, Gemma McCarthy, Sebastian McCarthy, Violet McCarthy, Ronnie Rojas, Camryn Rojas, and Evelyn Rojas. Martha was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Schmitt, and survived by her sister-in-law, Kwi Ye Schmitt, along with a host of extended family and close friends.
Martha’s heart was designed by God to be a caretaker and advocate for others. She worked as a social worker for Mercy Health and continued serving, in her own special ways, long after her retirement. Over the course of her life, she provided countless meals and spiritual gifts to her family, church, friends, and complete strangers. Martha enjoyed the company of her friends and their frequent lunch visits. She was spontaneous and always looked forward to her next bargain hunt or rummage sale. We are so thankful for the blessing of Martha’s loving, encouraging, and supportive spirit!
