I'm so sad to see the loving Martha has passed. I have been looking for her. I cleaned her house for 4yrs until My Mom passed. She was so caring to My kids n I. She was a loving caring Sweet Soft Beautiful lady. She will always have a special piece of my Heart. My Heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I'm so Sorry. I really loved Martha, I had a many memories with her. I thought she would be here passed 100. God Rest Her Soul. Love Always Peggy ❤

Sending condolences and sympathy to Sarah and siblings on the passing of your mother. She was a wonderful, warm-hearted woman who always made me feel accepted as part of the gang. I have many happy memories of my childhood spent in the company of your family.

I have wonderful memories centering around the horses and ponies, dogs, and goats in Sunset Farm and the Middletown farm, with Mrs. Vernlund's kindness and generosity toward me never forgotten. It was obvious to me that she was a special lady the minute I met her. Sharing the day and a seat on the Red Bus in Glacier National Park is one of my fondest memories. My thoughts and prayers are with all of her family .....

Vernlund, Martha Shepard of Sunapee, NH and formally of Middletown, CT died peacefully with loving family by her side on July 23 at age 92. Beloved mother of Emily DelConte, Trina Hill, Alice Ford, Sarah Vernlund, Carl Vernlund, and Robert Vernlund. Grandmother of Kristen Gundersen Penno, Heather DelConte, Renee DelConte Nevills, Shannon Vernlund Manchesi, Lauren Vernlund, Ryan Vernlund, Jessie Ford & Anders Lundgren. Great Grandmother of Emma Nevills, Madeleine Penno, Austin & Lily Manchesi and many nieces and nephews of the Shepard and Irwin clans. Pre-deceased by siblings Francis Irwin and William Shepard; former husband Robert James Vernlund MD and nephew Christopher Irwin.Born in Berlin, CT on November 15, 1922 to Katrina B. and William C. Shepard. Martha attended the The Day School in New Haven and graduated from Vassar College (1943) with a degree in French. She married Robert J. Vernlund MD in October 1946. She worked as a civilian for the Navy in Quonset Point, RI and after raising her family, for the CT Forest and Park Association in Middletown, CT. Martha was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of West Hartford, CT. She resided for many years in Middletown CT on her horse farm. She was a charter member of the Berlin Land Trust and served on the board of Directors until her retirement in June, 2014. Her greatest joy was spending time with family.A Celebration of Life for Martha will be held on Saturday, August 1st at 4:30 PM at St. James Church in Burkehaven, NH. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Berlin Land Trust, Inc. P.O. Box 94, Berlin, CT.
