My Dad used to take me to Washington Park to watch Bill play baseball for Christy Plating, it was always exciting cause Bill was gqood. I saw the Sanfords often cause Bill's in-laws were our neighbors, young Billy was one of my childhood friends. Years later I saw Bill at my aunt's memorial service. He looked at me, smiled and told me that I looked just like my Mom. It was the first time I had seen the man since I was 11 years old. He looked wonderful,I could tell that the years had been kind...

William Earl Sanford Jr. age 92, of Groton, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2018. Born on December 14, 1925 in New London, CT. He was the eldest son of William E. and Bertha (Latham) Sanford. He graduated from Fitch Senior High school in 1943 and immediately entered the Navy serving his country from 1943 to 1945. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Helen Patricia (Harran). They were united in marriage on September 21, 1946, at Bishop Seabury Episcopal Church in Groton.
After World War II, Bill went to work for the Christie Plating Company in Groton, working there 32 years, and eventually became the Vice President and co-owner of the business. He also worked as a real estate agent and finally in his eighties, worked as a Security Guard for Pfizer Corporation in Groton.
He was devoted to his faith and for over fifty years was an active member and former Senior Warden at Bishop Seabury Episcopal Church.
They have four children, William E. III (Deborah) of Groton, Patricia J. DeHay (Robert) of Port Charlotte Florida, Susan L. Burns (Al) of Gales Ferry and Scott C. (Jennifer) of Uncasville, CT. They also have ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
He is survived by his brother John Sanford of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Charles Sanford of Quaker Hill and sister Florence Thatcher of Groton. He was predeceased by his youngest brother James Sanford.
The Sanford family would like to extend their gratitude to the Fairview Nursing home for their outstanding care and compassion.
The funeral is private and there will be no calling hours.
