John Slater Obituary

John Thune Slater passed away peacefully at the age of 93 in Bellingham, Washington on Thursday, July 30, 2020. He was born January 11, 1927 in Bellingham, Washington to Ruth and Glen Slater. John is survived by his loving wife Barbara of 63 years. John is also survived by three children, Kellie, Tim (Kiersten) and Patricia (Rolf); grandchildren, Alexa, Hannah (Tom), Katya (Kyle), Quintin, Abel and Grace and great-grandsons Noah and Theodore. John was a fourth generation Whatcom County resident and was preceded in death by his parents Ruth and Glen Slater and sister, Betty Smith. John was very proud of his pioneer heritage in Whatcom County, his great-grandparents having settled in Whatcom County in the 1850’s. John’s great-grandfather, George, was the first superintendent of schools in Whatcom County. His father, Glen, was elected Whatcom County Auditor when he returned home after serving as a pilot in France during WWI. After graduating Bellingham High School, John enlisted in the United States Navy and was training to become a tail-gunner when the war ended in 1945. Following his service, John attended the University of Washington and later graduated from the University of Washington Law School in 1952. John clerked for Washington State Supreme Court Justice Ralph Olson for a year before returning to Bellingham where he practiced law for 50 years, retiring in 2002. Following retirement, John and Barbara enjoyed boating and traveling with their many good friends and spending summers at their cabin on Lummi Island with their children, grandchildren and beach families on Lane Spit. While I knew John little, I grew up with Barbara at Silver Beach, our folks were close. John and Barb had my folks in for Thanksgiving dinner and I am always grateful for this. So sad in his passing, however he had a very outstanding career as an attorney, and most important, as a husband, father, grandfather, as well as friend to a lot. RIP ABB 541 688-6675

My dad. (John Louws) held John in high regard. He was a client of John. Dad has been gone for a few years now, but I remember the strong sentiment of respect that he had for John. Based on my experience with my dad and his judgement of character, John was a man of integrity who was appreciated by many.

My condolences to the family for the passing of a good man.

John Slater was a great attorney and modeled excellence and professionalism as an active member of the state and local bar associations for many years. John served on the WSBA Board of Governors. He earned a reputation for kindness and thoughtfulness. He served as legal counsel to area school districts for many years. He was a good friend to many attorneys in private and government practice. He was generous with his time and his law library, which I appreciated and took appropriate advantage of as he and I bounced strategies and ideas off each other in the late 1980’s and the 1990’s. He encouraged me to serve the state and local bar associations, which I did. I was born the year he completed law school, and yet he always treated me respectfully and as an equal at the bar.
Retiring from his practice was very difficult, because he identified so strongly as a problem solver and genuinely remained interested in his clients’ issues. But retire he did. The lesson I took from his transition was to leave the practice feeling you’d done your duty at a time when health would allow you to enjoy travel and other endeavors.
A life very well lived, well loved by his family and friends.
