Lawrence HANTMAN Obituary

HANTMAN, Lawrence W. Of Scottsdale, AZ, age 88, passed away on July 11, 2025.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Lawrence W. Hantman, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend and mentor. He passed peacefully, in his Scottsdale, Arizona home, surrounded by loving family.

Lawrence, "Larry," "Lefty," to tennis and golf friends and "Moose" to his family, led an extraordinary life. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Marli. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Hantman; his sons, Steven and Peter; and his stepdaughters, Jennifer and Bonnie. This year marked his forty-fourth year of marriage to Marjorie; a courtship that began with mint-fudge brownies and coffee and blossomed into a marriage of unbridled devotion. Larry and Marjorie were very close with their eight grandchildren, Leah, Christopher, Luke, Madeline, Sydney, Taylor, Drew and Zachary.

Born in Newark, NJ, to the late Herman and Estelle Hantman, whose parents immigrated through Ellis Island from Minsk, Belarus. Herman owned a local furniture store and Estelle was a concert violinist. Larry and his brother, Jerry's, childhood home was filled with music. Larry became an accomplished classical pianist, but his greatest musical talent was to play by ear. He would often play a beautiful and elaborate version of the theme song to a movie he had just watched and heard only once.

Larry attended Cornell University, where he majored in philosophy. He then attended Harvard Law School. Larry was a renaissance man: as comfortable discussing law as he was politics, art, music or history. He was extraordinarily well-read, with an insatiable thirst for knowledge and gifted ability to read at lightning speed.

Larry was accomplished professionally. As General Counsel, he was far more than just an attorney, he served a critical role working with his friends and collogues building Dunkin Donuts into a great, global company and was instrumental in its eventual sale to Allied Domecq.

After retirement, Larry turned his attention to his grandchildren. He entertained them with humor, music, stories and dancing, and yet, insisted on speaking to children, even when very young, as if they were adults to nurture their vocabulary and intellect.

As the grandchildren advanced through school, "Grandpa Moose" invested his time closely tracking academic progress. He obtained their syllabi and ordered his own copies of their textbooks. With the acuity of a corporate lawyer, he would teach his grandchildren to edit their essays.

Larry authored several short stories and a novel titled, "The Monet." His book revealed a sense of romantic passion known by few other than his beloved wife, Marjorie.

Larry's lifelong interest in tennis gave way to golf. He studied the mechanics of the perfect swing, but quickly realized that more important than club speed or shot dispersion, were the relationships that golf facilitated. Larry quickly became popular at his club, admired by staff for his kindness, and revered by friends for fast-paced ("Moose" speed) play, stimulating conversation, loyalty and thoughtfulness.

Larry connected with anyone and everyone. "Assume positive intent," and "act toward others so as to bring out the best in them," were among his favorite proverbs. He brought steady, calm, decisive, and ethical leadership to every setting. He operated with wit and humor. His advice was grounded in unwavering commitment to truthfulness, respect, and kindness.

As Larry aged, he developed close relationships with his caregivers. He loved them and always engaged them with deep genuine interest and gratitude.

Larry will be missed by all who knew him, he taught us to be better people, and we will forever honor his memory.

A Remembrance will be held on October 11, in Scottsdale, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, we ask for

donations in honor of Larry's granddaughter, Marli Knoedler, to be made to Angelman Syndrome Foundation.

Larry was the General Counsel for my first 12 years at Dunkin' Donuts. I started in the Legal Department as a legal secretary. Larry was insightful, generous, and wise. He was a gentleman, and he quietly inspired us to do our best.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Larry HANTMAN. He was special.

Larry was a mentor to me for several years at Dunkin´ at a critical time in my career. Imagine an accomplished Legal Counsel giving advice to a technology nerd; he was always interested in understanding how technology can improve results.

He helped me expand my understanding of how people communicate and make decisions. Larry was instrumental in my growth and I will always be grateful for his support and wisdom.

Condolences to Marjorie and the Hantman family on Larry´s passing. As a friend and fraternity brother of 70 years and a business colleague for over 25 years, I can testify to the significance of Larry´s life, his critical contribution to the growth of Dunkin´ Brands and to his kindness and intellect. He was one of my closest friends who I loved dearly and will miss profoundly.

My condolences to Marjorie and the entire family. Larry was my golf buddy at Granite Links for many years. We were the first tee time. We golfed with the club champion once and she commented at the end of the round that we played aerobic golf. She had never played a round that fast. We shared many stories and Larry had started to write a book about my adventures as a locksmith. I also had the pleasure of visiting him and golfing at his club in Arizona. We have lost one of the great ones!! Bill Conley

I'm so sorry for your loss of this wonderful, kind man. Moose was always a joy to be around. When I first think of him, I think of his piano playing, bowls of ice cream, and photos he'd taken with most of the heads cut off. He was a loving, generous man who I am sure will be truly missed by everyone that knew him.
