As someone who covered the Bruins in the 1980s for the Worcester Evening Gazette, I got to know Fran a little bit and I always admired his courtesy, his kindness and his genuine feeling for others. He never played the part of the big shot at the big paper; he was friendly and helpful to everyone he dealt with on the beat. As Kevin Dupont wrote in the Globe, he was a "true gentleman" in every sense of that term.

Greg: As I mentioned to you many times at the Bruins games, your grandfather was an inspiration to me. When I began covering the Bruins in 1975, he was always helpful, friendly, and an interesting man to know. I only wish I could have seen him more in his later years. I hope that he knew how much respect and admiration I had for him, and how much I've always remembered his help and encouragement. I miss seeing you at the Garden, and hope to see you soon.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Fran. He was one of my teachers at the Globe when I was starting out in 1953 and was one of the most honorable men I have ever known, a credit to his family, the Globe and Harvard. My most sincere condolences to his family who can rest assured that Francis was one of the superior men of his time. I am fortunate to have known him.
