WALTER HANNON Obituary

HANNON, Walter J. Sr. Former Mayor of Quincy Of Quincy, Massachusetts and Kennebunkport Maine died on July 7, 2018 in Maine. Walter was born on September 4, 1931 to Walter and Helen Hannon. He grew up in the Houghs Neck section of Quincy where he lived until 1945 when he moved with his family to Wollaston.

Walter graduated from North Quincy High School in 1949. While in high school he was an outstanding hockey player and if asked what his favorite subjects were, he would reply, "shop, gym and lunch".

In 1951 Walter met Patsy Tully. They married in 1953 and this was the beginning of a 64 year romance filled with love, laughter and kindness.

That same year, upon his father's death, Walter assumed control of his family business, the Hannon Tire Company.

Walter served as Ward 5 City Councilor from 1964 to 1971, and as a State Representative from 1967 to 1973. Walter was elected Mayor of Quincy in 1972 serving until 1975.

Walter spent years in Quincy politics pushing to make Quincy a model city. His work as Mayor lead the ground work for Quincy's Economic development today.

In 1979 Walter was named Director of Development by Marina Industries to direct the master planning of Marina Bay in Squantum. In 1996 Walter went to work for the Marina Bay Corporation to oversee the Granite Links Project, a reclamation of a quarry into a first class golf course and restaurant. Some doubted this would happen, but Walter never did.

For all of his accomplishments his greatest loves were his wife, children and grandchildren the true essence of what he was.

Walter enjoyed walks on Gooch's beach with Patsy, as well as large family dinners at his cherished home in Kennebunkport. Together they attended every event that their children and grandchildren were involved in. A favorite was his Annual Christmas Girls Night out when he and Patsy took their five granddaughters into Boston for a special evening. He loved playing golf with his sons and grandsons at Webhannet Golf Club in Kennebunk, Maine. He was the best dad and Da a child could ever ask for.

Walter was the loving husband of the late Patricia Tully Hannon. Loving father of Elizabeth A. Hannon, Susan Hannon Esielonis and husband Steven, Walter J. Hannon and his wife Kelley, Thomas A. Hannon and his wife Sheila, Patricia Hannon Pattison and her husband Robert. Wonderful and loving grandfather to Jessica, Hannon, Brianna Hannon, Alexandra Esielonis, Julia Hannon, Tucker Hannon, Walt Hannon, Teddy Hannon, Cameron Pattison, Reese Tully Pattison and Lincoln Pattison. Brother to the late Helen Scalera, Sr. Phyllis Hannon and Sarah Hannon Wentworth. Walter also leaves behind his daughter-in-law, Krisanne Godfrey, cousins, dear friends and his wonderful caretakers Nancy Sayers, Julie Keaney and Sarah Dempsey.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Thursday 3-8 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY. Each time I pass the beautiful monument at the head of the roadway bearing Walter's name I'm quickly reminded of what an extraordinary leader he was and a great friend. May he rest in peace for all his good work.

Sorry to hear of Mayor Hannon's passing. I remember when he used to come over to Davis Street to visit his friend Johnny Wright who lived next door to us. I bumped into him about 10 years back in the supermarket and he was the same as always, nice man and pleasant to talk to. He did a great job for Quincy. His influence will be remembered for generations. Rest in Peace, Walter.

Dear Tricia, Bob, Cam, Reese, Lincoln and family,

I am very sorry to hear of Walter's passing. A very honorable Mayor of Quincy back in the 70's. I remember meeting his wife at Cohasset Skippers Boys Soccer games I videotaped watching Cam play months before her passing. Please accept my sincere condolences and sympathies. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Take care and God Bless you all.

Sad to hear of Walter's passing. Proud to have called him friend. No arrogance, easily accessible, help any and all he could and did with neither question nor qualification. Recall many stories but my fave will always be an unusual Sat A.M. council budget hearing on a new school. The mayor emerged in tennis togs from his office (then off the old council chamber foyer), stood listening a bit. When his presence was remarked, the Mayor simply said (paraphrase) "Pass what we agreed, send it to me, I'll sign it. One penny more or less, I won't. Now I'm late for tennis." and off he went. Direct, no-nonsense, fiscally careful, he loved his city and served her well. And he was a darn nice guy. Deepest sympathies to his First Lady and ours and to his family. May he rest in peace. Hope he has a really good tee time as he waits for his beloveds.
