ALLAN SHAPIRO M.D.

SHAPIRO, Allan M.D. Of North Andover, died Saturday, January 23, 2021. He was the beloved husband of Carol (Jurgensen) Shapiro for 57 years. In 1956, Allan graduated from William Cullen Bryant High School in Queens, NY. He received a BS from Queens College and an MD from Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He was a decorated Captain in the U.S. Army, serving one year in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star with V for Valor, the Air Medal, and the Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star. Upon leaving the military, Allan and Carol moved to Roslyn, NY, where Allan began practicing internal medicine. He became a partner in a practice in Plainview, NY in 1974, retiring in 2007. Allan was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, Manhasset, NY, serving in many capacities, including president of the congregation. After retiring to Massachusetts, he became a member of The North Parish of North Andover Unitarian Universalist Church, where he served on the Membership Committee and volunteered for the People's Pantry. Allan had a great sense of humor. He loved history, gardening, poker, traveling, and practicing medicine, but most of all he loved his family. A compassionate and dedicated humanitarian, his strong sense of right and wrong centered him as a guide for his family and friends. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Elizabeth Shapiro and her husband Stephen Greider of Groton, CT, Kimberly Lynn and her husband, Eric, of Methuen, MA, and Karan Penton and her husband, Michael, of Wallingford, CT; grandchildren, Brent & Mitchell Shapiro-Albert, Helen Shapiro-Albert and her husband, Ciaran McCann, Brad and Jason Lynn, Gabe, Nolan and Rori Penton, Alexandra and Kenny Greider, and Sarah Legare; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
