BENJAMIN SOBLE Obituary

SOBLE, Benjamin David Age 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 12, 2020 in Canton, MA, due to complications from COVID-19. Born at home in Mattapan to Isador and Rose Soble on April 27, 1926, he lived in various sections of Boston before moving to Needham, where he lived for fifty years. At the center of Ben's life were his family and their well-being. He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 70 years, Thelma Zeitler Soble, also of Canton, and by his adoring daughters and sons-in-law, Carol E. Soble (Michael Shibley) of Takoma Park, MD, Joan S. Soble (Scott Ketcham) of Quincy, and Lauren J. Amidon (Ron) of Revere. Ben also leaves his devoted grandchildren, Rabbi Daniel S. Shibley (fiancée Dr. Devora Isseroff) and Beth S. Getzandanner (husband Kenneth); and his great-grandson, Adam J. Getzandanner. Ben was also much loved by his sister-in-law Erline Soble; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Myrna Z. and Howard Schwack; and brother-in-law Martin Selig (late Elayne Z. Selig), as well as by his nieces, nephews, cousins, and their children. Ben was predeceased by his brothers, Henry, Joseph, and Eugene, whom he always missed. A graduate of Boston Latin School (1943) and Harvard College (1947), he was an active alumnus of both institutions. Ben enjoyed telling stories about his U.S. Navy and overnight camp experiences. He was enthusiastic about classical music, golf, tennis, and televised sports; in addition, he read and learned avidly throughout his life, and was a favorite of his daughters' friends. Due to the pandemic, services and shiva will be private. The family will always be grateful to the Orchard Cove staff, whose constant care, concern, and kindness reflected their professionalism, generous spirits, and genuine affection for Ben. I am deeply saddened to learn of Benjamin Soble's passing. My heartfelt condolences go out to dear Thelma and to Carol, Joan and Lauren. I know you will miss him greatly. I came to know Ben through his long-time friend Paul F. Kelly, also a BLS '43 and Harvard graduate. Memories are vivid of many a Harvard football game on Saturday afternoons in Harvard Stadium - oh, what fun we had! Ben was a kindly, warm-hearted, loyal, and totally genuine person whose love of his family and friends knew no bounds. I was privileged to call him my friend too, and will remember him always with the greatest fondness and respect.

I have such fond memories of Mr Soble. Sometimes, when I would go to the house to pick up Lauren and had to wait for her to get ready, he and Thelma would sit and talk to me. He was always so sweet and kind. He and Thelma also were very close with my parents, Bernie and Charlotte Francer and they cherished his friendship. My heart goes out to the whole family. May memories of him bring comfort to you all.

I remember meeting Cousin Ben many many years ago when my father, Kenny Soble was alive and we'd run into him somewhere. They looked alike and we would also be laughing - terrific memories and so sorry to see another Soble gone. May his memory be a blessing.
