PAUL MACDONALD Obituary

MacDONALD, Paul Francis Antiques Dealer Paul was born on April 1, 1950 in Boston, the only child to Helen Norton MacDonald of Darien, CT and Francis MacDonald, Jr. of Boston. He graduated from Rockland High School in 1968.

In 1970, he was hired by William Filenes Sons Company as part of their visual/display department where he was employed in their flagship Boston store and then later at their store in Warwick, RI and starting in 1975, the Filenes South Shore Plaza store in the same capacity. He was later employed by Lord and Taylor in Boston in during the 80s and became the display director at William H. Harris Furriers in Warwick, RI during that same period.

Since 1975, Paul was a member of The New England Antiques Dealers Association, where he will be fondly remembered.

In 1988, he opened The Shop on The Hill, on Beacon Hill - first on West Cedar Street where he focused on painted furniture and unusual lighting in a space later admired and highlighted in The Boston Globe, featuring trompe loeil by his friend and artist Judy Morris. He remained in business on Beacon Hill until 1998. In 2002, he opened his shop in his historic sea captains house in Brewster where he remained in business until 2015.

Paul was an avid collector of clocks and watches of all kinds and the artist Peter Hunt, whose pieces he admired from the 40s thru the 60s. Though Paul was often late, he was always forgiven due to his easy going demeanor and sweet and kind personality. He loved nothing more than to marry beautiful things together in a harmonious setting for the admiration of others and to please himself. He leaves this world a more beautiful place.

He will be forever missed by his friends and clientele who knew him well and his partner of 30 years John E. Posey.

John and Paul will be forever grateful for the care shown by the Visiting Nurses of Cape Cod, particularly Margo and Sue and Suzanne and those that assisted them both during their times of great need.

Any contributions can be made in the name of Paul F. MacDonald to the VNA of Cape Cod as well as the Brewster Historic Society or any charity of choice. A memorial will be held at a later date at Paul and John's home at the end of this summer or early fall.

Heartfully saddened to learn this day of Paul's passing and of the enormous loss that John is bearing.
Paul was a true gentleman who loved the decorative arts. We did business together at his favorite venue, Antiques Shows, where I would be an exhibitor. Price negotiations were to be expected and it was always a pleasure to close a deal with Paul, knowing he would include it in a setting to enhance the item and for his decency.
My best regards to John.

I am soi saddened! I worked with Paul and became friends at Filene's in Braintree. He was a hilarious, wonderful human being. His memory will be a blessing.
