Leo M. Flynn

81, of Lynnfield, formerly of Everett, died on Friday, May 16 at home in Lynnfield. Born in Everett on November 18, 1921, he was the son of the late Patrick and Alice (Jameson) Flynn. His father "Paddy" was a New England Welterweight boxing champion in early 1920's. Mr. Flynn was raised in Everett and was a graduate of Everett High School, Class of 1940 and soon after graduation enlisted in the Army Air Corps. During World War II, in the fall of 1944, he was shot down during his 34th and next to last bombing mission over Germany. He cleverly eluded capture by locating the Allied underground and after several days, he was smuggled back to England and safety. Wounded during the attack, Mr. Flynn received the Purple Heart and several Oak Clusters for his efforts and valor. After his combat experiences, Mr. Flynn finished Harvard College on a scholarship, graduating in 1946, and in 1954 acquired his Master's Degree in Business Administration at Harvard. During his undergraduate days, Mr. Flynn, a renowned football player, displayed his football prowess and shared the Harvard gridiron with classmate and future U.S. Attorney General and NY Senator Robert F. Kennedy. He was called back to serve in the Army during the Korean Conflict and served from 1950 to 1952. At the time of his discharge, he held the rank of Lieutenant. A prominent North Shore Real Estate Appraiser and Consultant, his office was located on Cabot St., Beverly for many years. He was a former faculty member of Boston College Business School and Faculty Consultant and Senior Lecturer at Northeastern University in Boston. For 19 years, he was a member and a former Chairman of the Board of Assessors for the Town of Lynnfield. He was an expert in the field of real estate and his services were often sought as an expert witness in trials regarding valuations, taxation and eminent domain. Mr. Flynn had lived in Lynnfield for the past 38 years and was a member of St. Maria Goretti Parish. Mr. Flynn is survived by his wife Betty (Nicholls) Flynn, three sons, Leo Flynn, Jr. of Cinnaminson, NJ, Peter Flynn of Saugus and John Flynn of Gloucester, his brother William "Buffo" Flynn of Salem, NH, four grandchildren, Nancy, Deirdre, Alyson and Meaghan and by many great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late James Flynn of Malden and Mary "Toody" Beckler of Walpole. Funeral Services will be private.
